Happy Earth Day!
Earth Day 2014 beach cleanup heal the bay santa monica pier aquarium
Here at Heal the Bay HQ, we've been celebrating the 44th anniversary of Earth Day all month long. This Saturday is YOUR chance to honor the ocean at our Earth Day Extravaganza at the Santa Monica Pier. We've got a day's worth of activities for the entire family, so prepare to get your hands dirty and your beach clean!
  • Designer Sandcastle Contest: 9am - noon
  • Nothin' But Sand beach cleanup: 10am - noon
  • Santa Monica Pier Aquarium FREE for cleanup participants: 11am - 5pm
  • Family Sandcastle Contest: noon - 2pm
If you've already forgotten your New Year's resolutions, how about making a new list for Earth Day? We asked some of our staff scientists to brainstorm some bite-sized eco-resolutions manageable enough for any Earthling:
"Say no to straws! They are a huge contributor to plastic pollution." Dana Roeber Murray, Marine & Coastal Scientist
"Put a brick in your toilet tank to reduce water consumption." Peter Shellenbarger, Science & Policy Analyst, Water Quality
"Buy a showerhead with a 'pause' feature so you can stop water waste while lathering up." Amanda Griesbach, Water Quality Scientist
"Do your spring cleaning safely--check out your nearest S.A.F.E. center to dispose of toxic trash." Katherine Pease, Watershed Scientist
Be a Heal the Bay Hero
Heal the Bay tshirts by Tim Biskup and Florencio Zavala
Step away from the Spandex onesie: Heroes are wearing Heal the Bay t-shirts this summer.
For just $9 per month, you can protect the ocean AND score some conservation couture. Your recurring donation is different from a one-time gift: It will help sustain our work throughout the year. The ocean never takes a day off, and your pledge will help keep it clean.
To support our call for monthly sustainers, local artists Tim Biskup and Florencio Zavala designed these limited edition t-shirts - our gift to you for your continued support. If becoming a Hero isn't on your agenda for Earth Month, you can still snag a shirt at ZJ's, Channel Islands Scuba or at this Saturday's Earth Month Extravaganza at the Santa Monica Pier, while supplies last. Beginning May 1, you'll be able to purchase shirts via our website!
Still not convinced about our need for heroes? Watch the heroic lengths new HtB staffer Nick does for the cause.
News From the Aquarium
It's been a big month under the Santa Monica Pier. Literally: Our baby sea hares have gotten HUGE! They're probably stress-eating because they haven't been Aquadopted yet...
Got kids? (Cue ominous music...) Summer break will be here before you know it! Luckily, we still have spots in our fun-filled Science Adventures Camp at the Aquarium. Our first week is already full, but the last three sessions (7/7-7/11; 7/14-7/18; 7/21-25) are awaiting your budding biologist.

Aveda Institute of Los Angeles Healer of the Month
The Aveda Institute Los Angeles is our Corporate Healer of the Month, generously supporting our conservation efforts both financially and in the trenches: Over 50 stylists combed the beach at a cleanup, netting 54 lbs. of garbage and 1,368 cigarette butts. Way to go, Aveda!

Hang Ten

Stacey Armato earned a spot in our Hang Ten roster this month thanks to her tireless efforts to keep Hermosa Beach a drill-free zone. We salute Stacey and her fellow activists at Keep Hermosa Hermosa for standing up to big oil.
Stacey Armato and California red-legged frog
California Red-Legged Frogs, once threatened, are now thriving. These cuties are enjoying their new home in the newly-preserved Santa Monica Mountains.
Wipeout!
Slant Drilling in the Bay: Big oil is banking on Hermosa Beach residents' approval of  drilling in the Bay. Scientists cite a 34% chance of an oil spill. We are 100% concerned.
Wipeout! Oil Drilling Derrick and Rodenticide
Rodenticides: Our resident Griffith Park mountain lion is suffering from exposure to rat poison, which also harms our inland waterways. Luckily, the recently-passed Santa Monica Land Use Plan bans these toxins.
