In-person events are returning in 2022! We are pleased to announce that our first regional, general audience in-person events since the pandemic will begin in January. For the safety of our guests, we are requiring that all attendees be fully vaccinated and provide documentation of COVID-19 vaccination upon arrival. A digital photo, photocopy, or physical vaccination card is sufficient. We will also be following all local procedures and mandates and limiting the number of attendees based on venue capacities. Cheers to a Great Cause
The fall release of the 2018 L’Èrudite (“The Scholar”) by L’Ecole No. 41 owners Megan Clubb ’79, Marty Clubb, Riley Clubb ’09, and Rebecca Clubb will benefit the Whitman Institute for Summer Enrichment (WISE) program.
WISE is an all-expenses-paid program to introduce students to college life in order to create excitement for pursuing a college education. Each year, 15-25 local middle school students stay on campus for 3 days and 2 nights, attend college prep workshops, and participate in classes taught by Whitman professors. More than 300 students, many of whom are from low-income families or would be first-generation college students, have participated since the program started in 2006.
L’Èrudite is a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 30% Cabernet Franc from the most distinguished blocks of the winery’s Estate Seven Hills and Ferguson vineyards.
The wine is available exclusively in L’Ecole’s Westside and downtown Walla Walla tasting rooms and online at lecole.com. Read more about the gift.

Academic Theme: Climate Reckonings, Climate Justice
To deepen our collective understanding of global climate change and to empower Whitman community members to respond meaningfully to this challenge at scales both small and large, we have adopted the academic theme “Climate Reckonings, Climate Justice” for 2021-22. There will be presentations by prominent leaders, panel discussions, readings and performances throughout the year - many of which are virtual and open to alumni, parents and friends of Whitman. Scheduled events are listed on the Academic Theme page at least a week in advance.

Harper Joy Theater
The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood Directed by Laura Hope, Associate Professor of Theater and Dance
December 9-12, 2021
In Homer’s “Odyssey”, Penelope - wife of Odysseus and cousin of the beautiful Helen of Troy - is portrayed as the quintessential faithful wife, her story a salutary lesson through the ages. Left alone for twenty years when Odysseus goes off to fight in the Trojan War after the abduction of Helen, Penelope manages, in the face of scandalous rumors, to maintain the kingdom of Ithaca, to bring up her wayward son, and keep over a hundred suitors at bay. When Odysseus finally comes home after enduring hardships, overcoming monsters and sleeping with goddesses, he kills her suitors and - curiously - twelve of her maids. In a splendid contemporary twist to the ancient story, Margaret Atwood has chosen to give the telling of it to Penelope and to her twelve hanged maids, asking: 'What led to the hanging of the maids, and what was Penelope really up to?'
In Atwood's dazzling, playful retelling, the story becomes as wise and compassionate as it is haunting, and as wildly entertaining as it is disturbing. With wit and verve, drawing on the storytelling and poetic talent for which she herself is renowned, she gives Penelope new life and reality - and sets out to provide an answer to an ancient mystery.
