Journalist and author Howell Raines '64 was inducted into the 2023 Alabama Writers Hall of Fame, at a March 10 ceremony in the University of Alabama's Bryant Conference Center. Read more about Raines on the BSC Blog.

National Conference of Black Political Scientists
Last week, BSC Junior Matt Dale and Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Desireé Melonas presented a co-authored paper at the National Conference of Black Political Scientists Annual Meeting in Atlanta, “A Call to Disorder: The Entropy of Liberation Movements.” The National Conference of Black Political Scientists (NCOBPS) is organized to study, enhance, and promote the political aspirations of people of African descent in the United States and throughout the world.

April 29 Hillfest 2023
2-4 p.m. Saturday | Hill Amphitheatre | Come watch students and faculty perform at the Association of Music Students’ annual performance event. The Drink Fresh food truck will provide refreshments, and the first 50 students admitted will get a free acai or pitaya bowl. If you are interested in performing, please send a video of yourself performing one song you would like to play at the event to demacdou@bsc.edu by March 31.

Hubbs Award Nominations
The Hubbs Award honors “the student who best exemplifies the twin principles on which Birmingham-Southern College was founded: academic excellence and selfless service.” The student will embody the following quote from Martin Luther: “We are free, subject to no one; we are servants, subject to all.”
Faculty, staff, and students are invited to nominate students who exhibit these qualities at a high level. A Selection Committee will then determine the recipient, who will receive a scholarship and award to be announced at the Honors Day Convocation ceremony on Thursday, May 4. Your nominee must be a current junior.

Provost’s Award for Diversity in the Classroom
The Provost’s Award for Diversity in the Classroom honors a faculty member who excels in incorporating diversity into his or her instruction and interaction with students. To be considered for the award, a faculty member must be nominated by one or more students.
There are multiple dimensions that might be characteristic of an individual’s focus on diversity, including these:
• Enhancing students’ understanding of the many dimensions of human difference including race, ethnicity, gender, nationality, ability, class, sexuality, religion, and age.
• Maintaining a classroom atmosphere that helps students feel able to express diverse views.
• Incorporating inclusive teaching practices.
• Consistently incorporating diversity into the curriculum.

BSC Scholarship Opportunities
All scholarship opportunities open on March 1 and close on March 31. Apply here.
The Dowell Family Scholarship is awarded to a rising senior who meets the following criteria. Candidates must 1) be in good standing with Sigma Alpha Epsilon or Alpha Omicron Pi, 2) have demonstrated leadership to their chapters, 3) have a GPA of 3.25 or higher, 4) have exhibited campus and community involvement, 5) provide a 750-word or less essay regarding your leadership activities while at BSC, including what you have learned and accomplished.
The James Curtis Williams, Jr. Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a rising sophomore who meets the following criteria: 1) a GPA of 2.0, 2) financial need, and 3) is currently employed part-time. The annual award shall be no less than $2,000 per recipient and is renewable for two additional years provided the recipient(s) maintain a 2.0 GPA or better. This award is additional to any financial aid already being received in hopes that it will eliminate the need for the recipients to work so that they can concentrate fully on their studies at BSC.
The Dr. Karen McKoy and Paul Lesser Endowed Scholarship is for rising juniors majoring in the health sciences who have financial need, with preference to those who are underrepresented minorities and are planning to practice healthcare in Alabama.
