A Message from VP Bowman
Spring is in the air….
I am not kidding when I say April was a very busy month. Events and travel like the tree planting in honor of Earth Day, the Green and Gold Gala, the CSU Business Conference, Hill Day (traveling to Washington D.C. to advocate for more funding for the CSU), had me hustling from one place to another. I know I am not the only one who felt this way. However, no matter how hectic my day gets, or how crazy my travel schedule becomes, I always feel centered and connected with all of the work ABA is responsible for when I step foot back on campus.
For example, when I was at the Earth Day tree planting event in honor of President Nelsen, I looked around and saw so many ABA influences. I saw the HEERF funded outdoor study/instructional pergolas, alert student CSOs walking across the quad, our LID devices (read more here), student assistants walking backwards giving a group a campus tour… I could go on and on. Suffice to say, no matter how busy we get, we should all take pride in the work we do, and know that your work matters and is appreciated.
April is also Alumni Month and in this spring newsletter we are celebrating all ABA CSU alumni. Did you know that the CSU has 4,000,000 (yes, that is six zeros) alumni? According to the Chancellor’s Office, one in 20 Americans with a college degree earned it with the CSU. That is quite an impact. Our list of ABA alumni is also impressive. Each of our alumni have experienced the best of the CSU and now have the opportunity to see first-hand how our work makes a difference to the lives of countless students. The work ABA is responsible for contributes to the successes of all of our students and in turn, our alumni. As we make a turn into our busy summer months, I would like to again, say thank you to my ABA colleagues. Your hard work does not go unnoticed.
Stingers Up!

Juneteenth
This year marks the 1st year that Juneteenth will be recognized as a paid holiday within the California State University (CSU) system. Juneteenth is a celebration that started in Galveston, Texas when African enslaved people learned on June 19, 1865, that they had been freed from the horrific bondage of slavery. At Sacramento State, the Juneteenth Delegation is not only planning a community celebration this year, but is also taking on the charge of hosting the 2nd Bi-Annual CSU Juneteenth Symposium in 2024.
In 2022, the CSU allowed all 23 CSU campuses to send a delegation of twenty-five people to attend the inaugural CSU Juneteenth Symposium in Los Angeles, CA. This two-day event created a safe space for all CSU campuses to celebrate African American history and achievement and further promote the anti-racism work specific to each campus.
The Juneteenth Delegation of Sacramento State hopes to continue this great work and further find commonalities and solutions as well as define actionable steps to remedy the harsh realities of stereotypes, Racial Battle Fatigue, and lack of accountability within higher education.
The following links provide more context on the history of Juneteenth and a debrief of the 2022 CSU Juneteenth Symposium

START Highlight: How ABA Helps the ASI Food Pantry
By: Jeanne Brewster and Carly Yates
You may have noticed that ABA has been encouraging donations for the ASI Food Pantry since this past December. You may be asking why we are doing this and why now.
Housing insecurity, low-wage jobs, and busy school schedules are all issues students face. But, add to these factors soaring food costs, and you can see why so many of our students are really hurting. Gina Curry, the Associate Vice President of Financial Services, serves on the ASI Board and hears about many of the issues our students face. Last November, the Food Pantry Coordinator, Ryan Choi, mentioned the extreme need. Gina decided we needed to do something to help.
The monthly themes are fun (we hope!), but they also serve a purpose. The needs of the Food Pantry shift month-to-month depending on what they purchased with cash donations, what items were donated, and what the students select. We visit the Food Pantry website each month to see what items they have highlighted and create the monthly theme.
There are several ways that you can support their efforts beyond donating items. They accept monetary donations through their website. This is particularly helpful as they can purchase items in bulk and capitalize on relationships for additional discounts. They also have an Amazon Wish List, which is a quick and easy way to get them exactly what they need.
Another way to support is to volunteer! Carly Yates in Budget Planning & Administration volunteers there periodically and says that volunteers can work the Pop-Up Pantry events, stock shelves, and check students in and out of the store. According to Carly, volunteering at the Pantry is convenient because it is on campus, which is great for busy people who still want to give back to their community. She says it is also really great to connect with the students since many of us in ABA have limited exposure to students.
If you have a few moments, please check out the ASI Food Pantry website. If you have ideas or future themes, feel free to email Jeanne Brewster at brewster@csus.edu. If you have any questions for Carly on her experience volunterring, please email her at yatesc@csus.edu.
