Dear Loyola Community,
November 6-12 is Loyola Week, a university-wide celebration of Loyola’s Jesuit and Ignatian heritage. The theme this year is "Seek Joy!" an important goal in the life of faith. Events will be Ignatian, enlightening, inspiring, and fun. This week also offers the opportunity to reflect and consider how we can “Live Loyola” wherever we are. You will receive a “Letter to Loyola” each day, reflecting on an aspect of our Jesuit values. And every day, you will get a chance to enjoy special campus activities that remind us of the importance of finding joy in expected and unexpected places.
Here are a few of the events in store:
- The week kicks off with a stand-up comedy routine by Father Jake Martin, S.J. at 7 p.m. in the St. Charles Room, followed by a special 9 p.m. Mass in Ignatius Chapel.
- On Monday, we will host “Loyola’s Got Talent!”, an open mic and karaoke night featuring live student acts during the commercials of the Saints Watch Party in Satchmo’s Lounge (Danna Student Center, Lower Level) with prizes provided by Catholic Studies.
- On Tuesday, which is also Election Day (don’t forget to vote!), we’ll compete Iggy-style in the Battle of Pamplona, as Jesuits, faculty, and staff face off against students in a not-to-be-missed basketball tournament in the University Sports Complex. That night, visiting theologian Father Pepe Ruiz, S.J. will present a spectacular magic show.
- On Wednesday evening, we’ll celebrate our Catholic spiritual heritage at Worship Night with The Vigil Project followed by a late-night breakfast bar.
- Thursday brings a Lunch and Learn sponsored by the student-led University Programming Board called “What the Heck is a Jesuit,” a Kahoot quiz competition with prizes and Cane’s chicken! Back in the Sports Complex, the women’s basketball team will announce a halftime promotion about Loyola Week.
- Faculty and staff will “Wine Down” on Friday with a wine-and-cheese social as we discuss articles connecting humor and spirituality.
- The Loyola Community Action Program (LUCAP), one of the oldest student service organizations in the nation, will join forces with alumni collecting donations for Iggy’s Cupboard on Saturday through Wolves on the Prowl.
- The Office of Mission and Identity will offer a spiritual companionship workshop on Saturday, November 12. Sign up here.
- Dr. Naomi Yavneh-Klos will lead activities tied to the Anne Frank Exhibit on campus that are designed to help us learn more about social justice and upstandhership.
All week, we will be celebrating in various ways around campus. Join in the fun, as we love, learn, and “Live Loyola.” We’ll see you there!
