We will test the entire campus today, Feb. 14, until 4 p.m. in Bill Battle Coliseum. We will also test 10 a.m.-Noon and 1:30-3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Health Services. Please make every effort to be tested today, if possible. The sooner we have campus-wide results, the sooner we can recalibrate our protocols to being significantly less restrictive.

COMMUNITY DATA

The trends in Alabama and Jefferson County continue to improve. The effective reproduction number (Rt) for the state of Alabama dropped dramatically from .83 to .48, and now to .31, the lowest forecast rate since we first tracked Rt. Based on this number, we can expect the rate of transmission to continue to decline more rapidly than we have seen over the past few weeks.

The positivity rate for Jefferson County has fallen from 39.3% to 22.9% and now to 15.1%. The seven-day moving average of daily cases continues to fall from a peak of about 400 cases a day the previous week to 244 cases a day last week.

The hospitalization rate in Alabama continues to fall, confirming the lessening impact of omicron.

CAMPUS DATA

This past week, we registered one positive result from 99 tests, giving us a 1.01% positivity rate down from 2.5% last week. The student vaccination rate is currently 85.9%.

As of Sunday, Feb. 13, we have one student in isolation and no students in quarantine.

FINAL THOUGHTS

If we have complete campus-wide results by Thursday, I look forward to announcing new protocols by the end of the week. Like many of you, I am ready to return to a more normal social and academic environment. I appreciate everyone’s patience during these past two years. I hope we are beginning to put this pandemic behind us.
