Redemption: The No Kill Revolution
Shelter killing is the leading cause of death for healthy dogs and cats. It doesn't have to be. Join Animal Ark, Animal Wise Radio, and the Animal Rights Coalition for the world premiere of Redemption: The No Kill Revolution in America on Friday, June 6 at the Heights Theater, 3951 Central Ave. NE in Columbia Heights, MN. Watch the trailer and then purchase tickets. We hope you'll attend the premiere of this important movie and urge your family and friends to see it.

ARC has a long history of supporting the no-kill movement as we believe most shelter killing occurs for convenience. We also oppose commercial breeding of companion animals and work to persuade Petland stores to stop selling live animals and switch to an adoption model through our Minnesotans Exposing Petland campaign. Selling animals for profit perpetuates the belief that animals are commodities with price tags. Petland Canada has stopped selling animals, and we are asking Petland USA to follow suit. With the Shakopee Petland store recently closed down, the only remaining Petland store in Minnesota is in St. Paul. Minnesotans Exposing Petland will continue to hold demonstrations and work to educate the public about this important issue.

Thinking about Going Vegan?
Calling all aspiring vegans! Have you been thinking about going vegan but been on the fence for a while? We have a very special opportunity for you. In partnership with Chicken Run Rescue, we're offering a tour of CRR's rescue and sanctuary on Saturday, June 21 so you can meet some of the hens who were previously exploited for their eggs and the roosters who ended up homeless because they were unwanted.  Having the opportunity to spend time with these animals and see that each one is a unique individual may be just the inspiration you need to go vegan.

Bringing friends and family who are not vegan is an option if you are already vegan, but we ask that you bring someone with you who is not vegan so we can take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to have the birds speak for themselves. You can find more details and RSVP at Minneapolis Vegan Meetup.
Catch-and-Release: It's Not a Humane Alternative
Fishing is a popular activity for many, and it is perceived as fun and harmless, especially when catch-and-release is practiced. But catch-and-release is not a humane alternative.

Yanking a fish out of the water is equivalent to depriving a human of air; a fish will slowly suffocate outside of the water. Dr. Culum Brown of Macquairie University says, "The stress that fish experience when they are pulled from the water into an environment in which they cannot breathe is exactly the same as a person drowning." Michael Stoskopf, Professor of Aquatics, Wildlife, and Zoologic Medicine at North Carolina University says, "It would be an unjustified error to assume that fish do not feel pain in these situations merely because their responses do not match those traditionally seen in mammals subjected to chronic pain." Handling fish removes their protective scale coating and makes them vulnerable to disease. Researchers at the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation found that as many as 43 percent of fish released after being caught died within six days.

For an excellent article about the ethical and environmental impacts of wild caught and farmed fishing, see Animal Aid UK's report Dark Waters.

Your attendance at No Pain in My Name protests is always needed to send Dr. Marilyn Carroll and the U of M the message that 30 years of forced addiction of primates, rats, and mice is too long. We need you more than ever at this event because Nickelodeon is sending a film crew from NYC to focus on Lilia, our summer student intern. Meet at the Moos Tower location on the Washington Ave. Mall; if you're at the intersection of Harvard St. SE and Washington Ave. Mall, we'll be just west of there.
