September Spiritual Message: Jewish High Holy DaysEvery month, we share a spiritual reflection from diverse voices across the university. In recognition of the Jewish High Holy Days, Dr. Naomi Yavneh Klos, Rev. Emmett M. Bienvenu, SJ Distinguished Chair of Humanities, Professor and Chair, Languages and Cultures shares her religious tradition with our community.
Yom Kippur – the Day of Atonement in the Jewish faith – starts this year at sunset on Sunday, September 24, with the traditional prayer, Kol Nidrei, and continues until one hour past sunset on Monday. Considered the holiest day in Judaism, Yom Kippur is observed with fasting and prayer, with many choosing to spend the entire day in the synagogue.
Jewish students, as well as students of all faiths, are also invited to join SpiriTuesday gatherings, every Tuesday from 5 – 6 p.m. in the Peace Quad.
According to Loyola's Religious Observance Policy, student absences on Holy Days are excused. Students are to be allowed a minimum of 24 hours after the conclusion of the holiday to complete any missed work, including exams and other assignments.

Meet Paola Ameglio, a second-year student majoring in neuroscience with a focus on psychology. As an international student joining Loyola from Panama, Paola also serves on the executive board of the International Student Association where she helps foster a sense of belonging and inclusion among all students.
Paola shares her story here:
Loyola's diverse student body, representing many cultures from Latin America, Europe, Asia, and beyond, has been a cornerstone of my positive experience here. This institution has consistently demonstrated its commitment to making every individual feel welcomed and valued.
Reflecting upon my initial days on campus, I recall nervousness, apprehension, and uncertainty. However, within a week, I eagerly departed for classes well in advance as I became engrossed in conversations with fellow students along the way. This transformation is one of my most cherished memories at Loyola, a testament to the daily occurrences that define our inclusive, open, and hospitable community.
Despite Loyola’s warmth, my adjustment would not have been fully possible without the long distance love and support my parents provided me with. I want to thank my parents for their support, and urge parents of the Pack to cheer their children on during this transition.
