Itching for seasonal allergy relief
by Dr. Kimberly Barker, PDC Pediatrics, CHKD Medical Group
Spring is in full bloom, which could mean more sniffling and sneezing around your house. Up to 40 percent of children in the U.S. suffer from seasonal allergies, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Seasonal allergies occur at certain times of the year, when trees, grasses and weeds release tiny pollen particles into the air. To lessen the effects, keep home and car windows closed, use the air conditioner and minimize outdoor activities when the pollen count is high. Additional tips, including seasonal patterns in Virginia, are on our website.
Understanding autism spectrum disorders
by Dr. Kate Crandley
Tidewater Children's Associates, CHKD Medical Group

Each day, our brains are busy interpreting the things we see, smell, hear, taste, touch and experience. For children with autism, it's not that simple. These children experience and process the world around them differently, which can make it hard to communicate, understand, play and learn. Symptoms of autism can range from very mild to severe and tend to emerge between 2 and 3 years of age. Talk to your doctor if you think your child is showing signs of autism.
Is it an emergency?
by Dr. Theresa Guins, CHKD Emergency Medicine
Parents may be tempted to rush a sick or injured child to the emergency room, but before making that trip, remember this: The sickest patients are seen first, which means you could end up waiting for some time. So what is an emergency? An emergency is when your child has a severe injury or illness that is threatening their life or may cause permanent harm. Warning signs that indicate a medical emergency include: trouble breathing, shortness of breath and sudden dizziness or seizures. If you think your child's life is in danger, call 911.
Preventing child abuse and neglect
by Dr. Suzanne Starling, CHKD child abuse program
The blue ribbons you see during the month of April represent Child Abuse Prevention Month. As parents, we know raising children is a great joy, but it can also be challenging. When your stress level rises and especially when you're angry, stop, breathe and then respond to your child. CHKD offers a variety of free parenting classes that help strengthen the family. Support Child Abuse Prevention Month by learning the signs of abuse and neglect. If you suspect a child is being abused, call the Child Abuse Hotline at (800) 552-7096.
