From Greed to Green- The Art of Sustainable Living

The Govardhan Eco Village (GEV) project began near Mumbai as a humble but bold attempt to solve these tough global problems by highlighting the importance of living a life in harmony with nature and to create a model of a community based on the principles of sustainable living.  Integrating traditional Vedic wisdom with modern approaches, GEV has made tremendous innovations in multiple areas such as alternate energy, water conservation, green sewage management, soil biotechnology, green building technologies, organic farming and animal care. GEV has won many accolades, most recently: the five-star rating from GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment), the best paper award at the 2014 International Conference on Agricultural, Ecological and Medical Sciences, and the prestigious SKOCH award - India's highest independent civilian honor.

Gauranga Das, an IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) graduate and Director of Govardhan Eco Village, will present a deep-dive on how they have employed nature's inbuilt mechanism of symbiotic recycling  and also discuss details about some of their projects like Waste Management, Water Conservation, Alternative energy, Soil biotechnology, Organic Farming, etc.

Conversations in Global Health: Providing Health, Education, and Hope to African Slum Communities

Changemakers and bestselling authors Kennedy Odede & Jessica Posner Odede join Stanford Medicine’s Paul Costello for a conversation about their work providing health care, education and hope to African slum communities. The conversation will be held from 4:00 - 5:00 pm, with a reception to follow.

Kennedy Odede grew up in the Kibera slum of Nairobi, the largest slum in Africa. Homeless from age 10, Kennedy had no formal education until, through extraordinary acts of persistence – and the advocacy of his now-wife Jessica Posner Odede – Kennedy was admitted to Wesleyan University, graduated in four years, gave the graduation speech, and is now on Wesleyan’s Board of Trustees. Together, Kennedy and Jessica founded Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO), a grass-roots organization that provides a growing range of services and opportunities to slum dwellers in Kibera and throughout Africa. They operate a growing series of health clinics that provide free services to 100,000 Kibera residents, as well as a K-8 school for girls, a community water system, public toilets, a savings co-op program and more. They are New York Times bestselling authors of the story of their lives, Find Me Unafraid: Love, Loss and Hope in an African Slum
