Mayor Finch: 'Major Victory for Adoptees in Connecticut'
Mayor Bill Finch held a press conference with State Representative
David Alexander (D-58) and advocates at the Capitol on Tuesday afternoon urging the passage of House Bill 5122.
On Wednesday night, the State Senate provided nearly unanimous support for adoption rights legislation (H.B. 5144). In response, Mayor Finch, an adoptee and longtime leader on adoption rights, made the following statement:
"This is a major victory for adoptees across the Connecticut. For too long, we've been treated like second class citizens who were unable to access birth records, which can help address medical issues, and give us the ability to understand our identities. I want to thank members of the House and Senate for their support of this critical legislation, and I urge Governor Dannel P. Malloy to sign this bill into law."
Mayor Finch Announces the Creation of More than 300 Summer Youth Jobs
Mayor Bill Finch announces the City's summer job efforts at a press conference held on Thursday.
At a press conference on Thursday, Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch joined representatives from businesses and community groups to announce summer job efforts around the city, which collectively will create more than 300 summer jobs for Bridgeport youth, ranging from ages 14-21.
In addition to the announcement, Mayor Finch urged other members of the business community to do their part to help create jobs in Bridgeport this summer.
“We want to put people to work right here in Bridgeport, including young adults during the summer months,” said Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch. “When businesses step up to the plate and provide opportunities for young people, the entire city benefits. These jobs will provide a structured environment for our youth to learn, and will also help grow our economy and pave a pathway to their future success.”
Mayor Finch continued: “More than 300 jobs is a great start, but we’re hoping to put even more of our youth to work this summer. We urge other businesses in the community to join us in this effort.”
Others in attendance at the press conference included: Bank of America; PSEG; The Workplace; and the Mayor’s Conservation Corps.

"Approval of Early Childhood Legislation Impacts Bridgeport" - Fairfield County Business Journal

The Fairfield County Business Journal spoke with Mayor Bill Finch, Tina Peloso-Ulreich, director of early childhood education and Lee Helmerich, school readiness coordinator for Bridgeport Public Schools about early childhood education legislation that was recently approved the Connecticut Legislature.
Bridgeport preschoolers and parents could benefit from recent Connecticut Legislature approvals that advanced major early childhood legislation, taking the state a step closer to universal access to preschools.

The desks may be tiny, but officials including Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch, see big paybacks for business, “because it keeps parents at their jobs.”

Through the legislation, a $13.8 million budget for fiscal year 2015 would provide funding to begin phasing in 1,020 preschool slots, increase per-child rate payments by 3 percent and establish a statewide office for early childhood.

Gov. Dannel Malloy is expected to sign the bills into law in the coming weeks, according to a statement.

"Bridgeport's purchase of North End facility a 'win-win' for youth" - Connecticut Post

The Connecticut Post recently covered the City of Bridgeport's purchase of the North End Boys & Girls Club facility located at 555 Madison Ave.
"I've been trying to do this since I've been mayor," Mayor Bill Finch said after the city council meeting last week. "We desperately need to get this facility open. It's exciting because our kids really need this. I've got four boys and I can tell you, if it wasn't for those types of outlets, a lot more kids would be getting into trouble."
