Loretta Schmitzer, Vice President, International Relations & Policy, The Boeing Company, will be the Keynote Speaker at the 2014 NAITA World Trade Day Luncheon, at The Westin Huntsville. Ms. Schmitzer will address the role of the President’s Export Council in advising the President on international trade policy which is key to the competitiveness of American products and services around the world. Ms. Schmitzer is responsible for Boeing's Congressional foreign policy/international affairs outreach and advocacy and advises Boeing CEO James McNerney, Jr., in his role as Chair of the President's Export Council. The President’s Export Council serves as the principal national advisory committee on international trade. The Council advises the President of the United States on government policies and programs that affect U.S. trade performance; promotes export expansion; and provides a forum for discussing and resolving trade-related problems among the business, industrial, agricultural, labor, and government sectors.
Ms. Schmitzer’s related government experience has included Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs where she was responsible for all the department’s relationships on the Hill and with governors and mayors. She also served as Deputy Coordinator of the Economics Cluster of the Clinton-Gore Transition and as Senior Trade Counsel of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. Working for the chairman, Senator Ernest F. Hollings, she handled all trade issues for the chairman and the committee.
World Trade Day recognizes the significance of international trade in the growth and economic well being of our region. NAITA and the Madison County Commission host the luncheon, which focuses on the importance of international trade to the world economy – and what it means in our local communities. Exports and foreign investment equal jobs, business opportunities, and economic prosperity for North Alabama. Join NAITA, the Chamber of Commerce of Huntsville/Madison County, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for an International Trade Update and learn more about international trade policy and how you can affect it.
The North Alabama International Trade Association (NAITA) is pleased to partner with the Chamber of Commerce of Huntsville/Madison County, the Von Braun Center for Science & Technology (VCSI) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to present the International Trade Update in Washington, DC on Monday, May 12, 2014 - augmenting the Chamber’s 2014 Washington DC Trip, May 11-13, 2014.
The NAITA International Trade Update will be held on Monday, May 12, 2:30-4:00 pm at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce at an additional charge of $50. The U.S. Chamber’s International Division will brief our group on the Chamber’s Global Trade Agenda including updates on trade policy, export control reform, and an overview of trade resources within the Chamber, as well as other key U.S. government trade resources. NAITA is preparing an updated version of the North Alabama Advanced Technology Capabilities booklet for distribution at the Farnborough Air Show and other upcoming international events. The current version is linked above.
Criteria for a company to be included in this booklet :
  • Small-medium sized business (per SBA guidelines)
  • Located in Huntsville/Madison County or North Alabama
  • Interest in doing business internationally
  • Doing business in one of the following industry sector/technology focus areas (or please suggest category if not included):
    • Small Spacecraft
    • Environmental Monitoring
    • Cyber Security
    • Interoperable Systems
    • Energy
    • Sensors
    • Robotics (UAVs)
    • Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance
    • Communications
    • Data Modeling & Analysis

Webinar: Defense Research Opportunities in Canada

NAITA is furthering its initiative to help advanced defense technology companies in North Alabama explore the global marketplace with an emphasis on Canada, and the following webinar seems to be a very good fit. The U.S. Commercial Service in Ottawa, Canada, in collaboration with the National Research Council  of Canada (NRC) have partnered to present a webinar on Defense Research and Development (R&D) programs available under the Canadian marine, aerospace, and other defense sectors.
Learn about the NRC’s various defense research programs, including their $220 million commitment under the  Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP). The webinar will also expand on NRC’s services, evaluation processes and compliance programs available to help you qualify your new and/or innovative technology when seeking partners in Canada, as well as explain various application processes and requirements needed when looking for eligibility under these R&D programs.
