The Power of One: Individuals Making a Difference
We often say that we believe ARC supporters and volunteers are the animals' real heroes and the people who will move our society toward justice for all animals. At ARC this isn't something we just give lip service to; we strongly believe that part of our work for animals is to create a culture and environment where volunteers can flourish and feel welcomed and supported in their efforts. Two recent successes by ARC volunteers show what dedicated individuals can accomplish.

Through volunteering with ARC, Matt became aware that the Wedge Co-op had published several negative articles about veganism that contained inaccurate information. Matt sent a polite email to the Wedge that he was disappointed that they would publish such articles, especially considering that the Wedge sold vegan foods and supplements. Matt not only received an apology from the new Wedge Communications Coordinator, but also a promise to remove the inaccurate articles and put him in touch with the Wedge's nutritionist to discuss the topic of veganism as a healthy alternative to the standard American diet for an upcoming column in the Wedge newsletter.

Rachel decided to contact all the places she used to eat at prior to becoming vegan that were no longer options for her because their menus did not have vegan options. Rachel received positive responses from at least four restaurants about adding vegan options to their menus and one local restaurant even invited her and several friends to come in and taste test the new vegan options.  As Rachel said "Instead of giving up on these places, let's remind them that vegans exist and there's a growing number of us. We should all be letting local restaurants know that we want them to give us options."

Great work Matt and Rachel! You have a dedication that is unwavering and we're glad you're on our side!

Meet Ashley Piediscalzi, ARC's New Outreach Coodinator
Ashley Piediscalzi is ARC's new Outreach Coordinator. Ashley plans outreach events, maintains a strong relationship with volunteers through regular communication, and helps new volunteers get involved in a way that works for them. Ashley is a passionate activist and vegan with a long history in animal rescue and a background in graphic design. If you'd like to learn about volunteering with ARC, Ashley will be happy to help you discover how you can best use your talents to help animals. You can email Ashley at ashley@animalrightscoalition.

And we'd like to send a shout out to our former Outreach Coordinator Jenna Cameron. We were sad to see Jenna go and will miss her, but we're excited for her new position at Hampton Creek Foods in San Francisco where she'll be working to get affordable, great tasting vegan foods into mainstream grocers and food service industries. We wish her the best and Hampton Creek is lucky to have her.
