Spotting Eye Problems
by Dr. Douglas Mitchell, General Booth Pediatrics, CHKD Medical Group
Healthy eyes and vision are critical to a child's development. If detected early, many vision problems and eye diseases can be treated, preventing vision loss, learning difficulties, and delayed development. Often, children cannot tell you if they're having trouble seeing, so it’s best to have their eyes examined regularly, beginning at 3 or 4 years of age. Signs and symptoms of potential eye problems are on our website. Always discuss eye examinations and visual screenings with your child's doctor.
Helping Kids Conquer Fear
by Kari Lewis,CHKD social work director
We’ve all experienced fear at some point in our lives. Children are particularly likely to have fears, and it’s completely normal. Help your children cope by accepting and respecting their fears. Fears are very real to children, so try not to laugh and make light of their fears. Whatever you do, experts say, don’t force your children to face their fears unless they want to. Seek professional guidance if your child’s fears significantly hinder day-to-day activities. Find a list of common fears and the ages they develop on our website.
Benefits of Fiber
by Lynn Kistler, CHKD Healthy You for Life registered dietician
Fiber isn’t just something adults need in their diet – kids need it, too. Foods rich in fiber are more filling and help curb the temptation to overeat. Another benefit of fiber is that it helps move food through the digestive system and may protect against stomach cancers, diabetes, heart disease and constipation. The American Dietetic Association recommends this simple rule: The total number of fiber grams a child should consume each day should equal the child's age plus 5, starting at age 2. Tips for helping your child get the fiber they need are on our website.
