GOLF IN THE FUTURE
HOW DO WE ATTRACT MILLENIALS?
I know this is a subject that has been beaten to death, but golf needs to "adjust".  Tradition is a wonderful thing but so is progress and they're not mutually exclusive.
World Golf Foundation Director Steve Mona recently stated that clubs should ask themselves if their rules need to be as strict as they often are. “Can you go out on the golf course with your shirt untucked? Can you wear your cap backwards? Can you play music in your cart? Can you bring your mobile devices out there? Can you drink beer while you’re going round?
“Millennials are used to being able to do all those things in their recreation. We need to make it the same for golf.”
In a recent article in The Guardian Mona expressed hope that golf's inclusion in the Olympics, which by most accounts was a success despite defections of some top players, would help move golf into the mainstream. To read more click below.

WE WROTE THE BOOK
GPA president Larry Hirsh has recently authored "Golf Property Analysis and Valuation - A Modern Approach" to be published next month by the Appraisal Institute.
In the book, Hirsh shares 35+ years' experience appraising, advising, consulting and brokering golf and club property. Topics of focus include market analysis, site and facilities, maintenance, marketability and the various elements of valuation, including the application of the approaches to value.
The book is a must have resource for architects, attorneys, bankers, brokers, club leaders, consultants, courts, owners, managers, buyers and sellers of golf properties, as well as appraisers who take on golf property assignments.  The book will sell for $60.00 ($50 for AI members) through the Appraisal Institute.  Look for a link to order in next month's issue of Chip Shots.
THE LEGAL CORNER
CAN MEMBERS FORECLOSE?
It's not uncommon for member groups to step up and take out a club's indebtedness.  However, members at New York's Westport Country Club had other ideas.  As shown in the article by Rob Harris of the website Golf Dispute Resolution, certain members (not all) at Westport, who purchased the debt at a discount, are seeking to foreclose and take over the club.  It looks like this case is headed for trial and could tell us a good deal about the efforts of limited member groups at other clubs to take over the clubs.
