Dear students - This summer we have a special 600-level course offering, available to (1) PhD students as an elective or (2) as an elective for MPA students NOT also doing a certificate (this course will not count towards certificate requirements).
Please note there are two courses with the same number, PADM 6930, offered in the summer so using the correct CRN and section number, provided below,is important if you register for this course (the other PADM 6930 course is not open to public administration students in general, it is for a particular cohort).
CRN 50850 PADM 6930 Section 95 Qualitative Research Techniques
How does an individual design, collect, analyze, and write-up qualitative research? To this end, the qualitative research course surveys a variety of diverse qualitative research approaches and helps students to develop practical qualitative research skills. This hands-on course achieves these goals by requiring students to read a broad range of articles, to contribute to in-class and on-line discussions, to make class presentations, and to apply concepts covered in class by designing, analyzing and writing-up a qualitative research project. A significant portion of the course will also be dedicated to understanding how to utilize qualitative data analysis software, i.e. ATLAS.ti; the software package helps to improve the speed and sophistication of analysis and reliability of findings. This course empowers student researchers to:
- formulate qualitative research questions
- select appropriate research participants (i.e. individual(s), groups, and/or organizations/institutions) and select the appropriate qualitative research method(s) to answer the research questions
- collect qualitative data and provide skillful order to the material
- code, interpret, and analyze superficially unrelated material
- find the proper fit between data, theories, and practice
- transform qualitative information into reportable descriptive data, narratives, and academic research papers.
The course’s emphasis will be on the types of data-gathering techniques and analytical approaches that are most effective in policy-relevant research.
Class Schedule:
- June 19th through August 7th; Thursdays 5 – 8:30 pm
- Hybrid Course: classroom and online format

Note:
This is a special topics course that counts as an elective for both PhD in public administration and MPA students not doing a certificate. MPA students should note that it does NOT count towards either the nonprofit management or the healthcare certificate, however. Consult your advisor if you are not sure whether this course is a good fit for you.
