“Bridgeport's Steelpointe Harbor advances with property transfer” – The Stamford Advocate
Mayor Bill Finch signs property transfer documents with
Ronald J. Pacacha, Associate City Attorney and Paralegal Shakira Simpson.
The long-awaited Steelpointe Harbor project on Bridgeport's waterfront has taken another major step with Mayor Bill Finch signing the first property transfer documents necessary to move the multi-use project forward.
With the signing, RCI Group, the project's private developer, now controls 12 acres north of Stratford Avenue needed for construction of a 150,000-square-foot Bass Pro Shops store and several other yet-to-be-announced retail establishments.
"This is a major step toward ensuring the construction of Bass Pro and other retail space, making this the biggest economic development project in the Park City since the industrial revolution," Finch said.
Mayor Finch: Boost Pre-K Access
At a press conference held on Wednesday, Mayor Bill Finch – joined by members of the Bridgeport delegation and early childhood education advocates – urged the state’s House of Representatives to pass legislation that expands access to early childhood education.

“Too many kids in Bridgeport and across Connecticut do not have access to pre-k,” said Mayor Finch. “As a father and as mayor of the state’s largest city, I find that unacceptable. I urge the House to pass early childhood education, which will ensure kids get the high-quality education they deserve.”

Senate Bill 25, passed nearly unanimously by the Senate last Friday and backed by Governor Dannel P. Malloy, helps provide more kids with the tools they need to succeed in school. It expands access to school readiness programs for kids who need it most, launches a Connecticut Smart Start program to help schools meet their pre-k needs, and establishes the Office of Early Childhood to coordinate pre-k and early childhood programs.

According to Lee Helmerich, School Readiness Coordinator for the Bridgeport Public Schools Early Childhood Education Department, the city is equipped to accommodate 450 new slots next year, and currently has 1,593 slots filled.

Harding High School Project Takes Critical Step Forward
Rendering of new Harding High School.
During Monday night's meeting, the Bridgeport Board of Education voted in favor of approving the site plan for a new Harding High School on the former General Electric site bounded by Boston Avenue and Bond Street. In response, Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch made the following statement:
“We congratulate the Board of Education for approving a critical step for this important project. As the father of two kids currently attending Bridgeport public schools, I know first-hand what children and families are dealing with every single day. And it’s unfortunate that the kids currently attending Harding High School are stuck with inadequate facilities that are not providing them with the world-class learning environment they deserve.
"But we can change this by building a new Harding High School. The new school will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities that provide kids in the East Side and East End with the high-quality learning environment they need to thrive. In turn, it will help ensure more Bridgeport kids are prepared for college and to compete for 21st century jobs."
