Spiritual Reflection: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at Loyola |
A Message from University Chaplain Thomas Ryan, Ph.D.
Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15–October 15) is a good opportunity to reflect on Hispanic theology at Loyola. The Loyola Institute for Ministry (LIM) currently offers a certificate in Spanish in theology and Ignatian spirituality.
|
| |
|
The Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the United States, through its journal, is an important and inspiring influence on LIM’s work. For example, Ada María Isasi-Diaz identifies an important theological theme as “lo cotidiano,” the “everyday,” the arena in which many women live and work. She argues that too often theology veers into irrelevance by attending to the abstract and abstruse. For her, God does not shun the everyday but, in Jesus, is immersed into it.
Thus, the everyday can be a privileged place of encountering God. Isasi-Diaz writes, “Lo cotidiano embraces our struggles and our fiestas, our birthing, living and dying, … our loving…. We create lo cotidiano when we walk, when we dance, when we work” (“Lo Cotidiana,” p. 17). And so, lo cotidiano can be a source of grace, as is the work of U.S. Hispanic theologians.

Diamond shares more about her journey at Loyola below!
What's been the most rewarding part of your Loyola experience so far?
|
| |
|
The most rewarding part of my Loyola experience is the relationships I have been able to make. I came to Loyola as an introvert and I am leaving with a stronger community!
What are you looking forward to this academic year?
I am super excited first and foremost about graduating and using everything I've learned at Loyola in the "real world." Secondly, I am excited to work and execute initiatives that make Loyola a sweeter place for those who will follow behind me!
Do you have any advice for other students who want to get more involved on campus?
I have three pieces of advice for students who want to get more involved:
|
-
Pick organizations based on what you are passionate about whether it is personal or professional. Being involved should be a place for you to have fun and grow your leadership skills!
- The key to balancing is knowing when to take a leadership role and when to just be an active member. I recommend having 1-2 leadership roles at a time to be an impactful leader!
-
Remember why you came to Loyola. School and your overall health should always be your top priority! If being involved will impact the reason why you came to Loyola, reassess deciding to be/get more involved.
