Graduate Student Showcase page on the GradPost
It's almost here! UC Santa Barbara's 2nd annual GRADUATE STUDENT SHOWCASE starts Monday, April 7, and runs through Saturday, April 19.
The Graduate Student Showcase is a two-week series of events that shines a spotlight on the enormous achievements and world-changing ideas of our graduate students. The Showcase features performances, presentations, and poster sessions; tours and open houses; and much more.
Our centerpiece, signature event is the national award-winning GRAD SLAM, a campuswide competition for the best three-minute talk about research or other big ideas by a graduate student. There are many more prizes this year, ranging from $50 UCSB Bookstore gift cards to the grand prize of a $2,500 research award.
Nearly 80 students are scheduled to compete this year. The student presenters come from nearly 40 disciplines across the campus, ranging from Music to Materials; Physics to Film and Media Studies; Communication to Computer Science; and Sociology to Spanish and Portuguese. The talks are sure to be entertaining; informative; enlightening; and impressive. Some of the more amusing titles: "Let Them Eat Ketchup" (History); "Kidney Punch" (Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology); "How Pizza Explains Yoga" (Religious Studies); "I Have the Foggiest Idea" (Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology); and "What Makes Grumpy Cat More Popular Than the Higgs Boson?"
For THE FULL SCHEDULE of presenters; their disciplines and titles of their talks; as well as dates, times and locations, please visit the GRAD SLAM PAGE ON THE GRADPOST.
Grad students, please spread the word about the Grad Slam. The campus community and the local community are invited to attend. Come cheer on your friends and fellow colleagues. We are proud of our graduate students and their accomplishments, and we want to show them off to the public.
Of course, you can't have a celebration for grad students without food, and we'll have plenty of that during the Showcase. We'll have bagels at the GSA Lounge; ice cream sundaes scooped by your very own Graduate Dean; wine and cheese; picnic goodies at San Clemente Village Apartments; pastries and fruit during Grad Slam presentations; and a great spread to top off Showcase at the Friendship Court reception after the Grad Slam Finals.
With the excitement about to begin, we thought we would take a trip down memory lane and present photos from last year's events in the collages below. In 2013, Grad Slam presentation topics ran the spectrum, from A (app) to Z (zombie). Acting and directing took center stage; students entered the human body in the AlloSphere; and posters portrayed researchers' best work.
Gaucho grad students: Please come and take part in this celebration of you! We look forward to seeing you, as well as the greater community of your supporters and admirers, during ...
