Dear Loyola community,
The Rev. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, S.J., wrote about Jesuit education that “if the measure and purpose of our universities is in what our students become, then the faculty are the heart of our universities.” The faculty are who help shape the “whole person” of each student, guiding them as they move on to make their impact on the world.
I can share many stories about how my professors helped shape and guide me on my path, but one comes to mind first. Early in my college career one of my professors saw my potential as the only African-American undergraduate history student at Ole Miss in 1990. I had switched majors and visited this professor during their office hours. After reading some of my writing, my professor recommended me for the prestigious Collegiate Scholars in History program at the University of Florida, where I spent two summers doing original research and learning from giants in the field. As a young scholar of color, the opportunity propelled me to continue my graduate studies and earn an Ed.D, ultimately landing me where I am today.
With the semester well underway, I want this story to serve as a reminder: Don’t be afraid to be smart in front of others. Know your potential and show it. Get to know your professors. They are there to mentor you and help you live up to that potential.
And to our Loyola faculty: don’t discount the difference you can make for your students. You are the heart of the university, helping to shape the future of those who will make a difference in the world. It’s a tremendous honor.
I hope that interactions during office hours this semester provide the enriching dialogue to foster learning for both faculty and students. From my experience, the questions and conversations have the potential to shape life’s trajectory for the good.
There is also an event this weekend that presents an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to engage in service and make a difference together. The World Cleanup Day is sponsored by the Environment Program, Students for Environmental Action, and Loyola Dining. The event brings our community together to clean up a beloved park near campus – The Fly. Lunch and cleaning supplies will be provided. Please RSVP here.
Peace and blessings,
Dr. Xavier Cole
President
