Dear Loyola,
Imagine this: Down 2, no time left on the clock, at the line shooting three free throws for a chance to win the National Championship. Athletes dream about being in situations like this and often act it out when given the chance. Anyone who watches sports might wonder how athletes can maintain their composure in times of heightened pressure. For me, I learned the value of meditation and reflection to keep me centered in athletics.
Finding inner peace can sound like a daunting task, but it’s much simpler than it sounds. The Jesuits promote cura personalis - “care for the whole person,” and the words “Mind, Body, and Spirit” reflect important commitments of Ignatian spirituality. Taking time each day to reflect (i.e. the Examen) taught me how to release my mind from distractions and remain at peace in moments of pressure.
When I played college basketball, a team psychologist helped us remain grounded. He told us that when we felt our minds wandering during practice or games that we should flex our feet in our shoes. Feeling our two feet on the ground would bring us back to the present moment.
Competitive sports gave me joy. They gave me an opportunity to release distractions from the outside and focus on the current goals at hand. When I was on the court, nothing else mattered.
I challenge you to find an activity that gives your mind a break and allows your body to take control. Recreation and sports are great avenues for this. Whether it is going for a walk, taking a bike ride, or playing a competitive sport, physical activities help you care for your whole self.
As part of Loyola Week, students play against the Jesuit/Faculty/Staff in a basketball tournament this afternoon in The Den. Join the crowd and root on your favorite team! Even if playing basketball is not your avenue for inner peace, spend some time and find an activity that brings your mind joy and your body health.
