Dear Loyola community,
Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month began April 1 and here we are, in 2022, still trying to prevent the cruel fact that people of every age, ability, race, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, socioeconomic background, and religion are vulnerable to experiencing the pain and trauma of the abuse of power that is sexual assault.
Understanding and respecting the personal boundaries of others is vital to creating a culture of respect and to preventing sexual violence. During this month and beyond, we call on all of you to be agents of change by fostering a culture of respect among all members of our community and beyond. To do this, we each have a responsibility to create an environment in which consent and respect are foundational principles and practices.
As a call to action, we encourage the Loyola community to engage with this issue by learning more about sexual violence, consent, university policies prohibiting sexual violence, reporting sexual violence, and resources and support services available to members of our community who have been victims of sexual violence. We also encourage you to learn more about bystander intervention to better understand how you can take an active role in preventing sexual assault and interpersonal violence.
Renew your commitment to stand with survivors, hold perpetrators accountable, and dismantle a culture that is complicit in allowing sexual violence to continue. Honor the courage of survivors, and all those they love, and be the light for those in darkness.
Sincerely,
Alicia A. Bourque, Ph.D. & Dawn Broussard, Ed.D.
