New ‘Top Docs’ addresses Georgia’s ‘GAVERS’ death registration system
The latest edition of the Medical Association of Georgia’s (MAG) ‘Top Docs’ show addresses what physicians need to know about death certificates and Georgia’s electronic death registration system – the Georgia Vital Events Registration System (GAVERS). It features Chris Harrison, M.P.H., the state registrar and the deputy director of vital records for the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH).
Harrison discusses…
– Death certificates and how are they used
– The role of Georgia’s Office of Vital Records
– The process to create a death certificate
– When a physician needs to complete a death certificate
– The information that’s needed to file a death certificate
– Common challenges and barriers physicians face in filing death certificates
– Times a physician should not file a death certificate
– Georgia’s death record system (GAVERS)
– Whether every physician in the state needs a GAVERS account
– How physicians can get a GAVERS account
Harrison has been with DPH since 2013, and he became the state registrar in 2019. He oversees the systems and processes that are used to collect, store, and distribute vital records data in the state. Prior to joining DPH, Harrison worked for a health system’s infection control and epidemiology department – performing disease surveillance and managing data on hospital-acquired infections. He has a master’s degree from the University of Michigan School of Public Health with a focus on epidemiology.
