Local Labor Leaders Honor Martin Luther King, Jr. Through Day of Service

On January 20, local labor leaders joined forces with board members from the Latino Hispanic American Community Center (LHACC) to make Martin Luther King, Jr. Day a day ON, and not a day off. The volunteers sorted toy donations and cleaned the LHACC senior citizens’ center.

Labor honors the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for not only his civil rights activism, but also his support of workers’ rights. On April 3, 1968, the day before his assassination, Dr. King traveled to Memphis to support AFSCME sanitation workers. That evening, he delivered his famous “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech to a packed room of supporters.
