Dear Loyola community,
Today marks the 50th anniversary of Pell Grants, a landmark program that has helped millions pay for college over the past five decades–approximately 7 million annually, including about 40% of students at Loyola.
The program has been a tremendous catalyst for change and opportunity for so many, but there is still work to be done to put a college degree within reach for more people. Conversations are ongoing about how to expand awards and eligibility for Pell Grants. Loyola and other Jesuit universities have been urging our representatives in Congress to significantly increase - if not double - Pell Grants. Lawmakers approved a small increase in Pell Grants for the 2022-23 year, but we need to do more to assist families and keep up with the actual cost of attending college.
Given the importance of Pell towards our goal of welcoming students from all socioeconomic backgrounds, I invite your consideration of advocating for an increase in grant aid and eligibility through contacting Congress via #DOUBLEPELL.
Let’s remain hopeful that together we can work towards a future where every qualified student is free of any financial barriers to a Loyola education.
Gratefully,
Justin Daffron, S.J. Interim President
