The Golden Shore, a talk by David Helvarg
David Helvarg, founder and Executive Director of Blue Frontier (www.bluefront.org) will share the history, culture, and changing nature of California’s coasts and ocean in a public talk at the Hopkins Boat Works lecture hall. He will show a short book video and then relate how California’s growth as a maritime power from Paleo-Indians trading in the Channel Islands to the development of America’s largest (and greenest) ports helped shape the world’s 6th largest economy.
David will highlight the role of the Navy, surfers and other drivers of change in the nation’s most populous state and how a Gold Rush and World War redefined the Golden Shore. He’ll explain the ongoing currents of discovery, California’s unique contribution to marine science and science-driven policies at a time when the best available science is identifying a global crisis in our living seas. While over-fishing, pollution, loss of habitat and climate change threaten the very survival of most of our blue planet and ocean-dependent economies, California provides a model for how we might turn the tide and live well with our coasts and ocean. Jennifer is a Strategic Product Partnerships Manager at Facebook, with a regional focus in the Middle East and Africa. In addition to working with tech developers and entrepreneurs, she also focuses on Internet.org, which aims to bring internet connectivity to the two-thirds of the world not yet connected.
In 2014 Jennifer completed a year long assignment with the Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Agency to support the Ministry of Agriculture's Growth and Transformation Plan 2011-2015. The Plan focuses on enhancing the productivity of smallholder farmers, strengthening market systems, improving participation of the private sector, and reducing the number of food insecure households. Using strategic planning with multiple stakeholders, design thinking, and technology, Jennifer worked on solutions related to climate and environmental sustainability on a national scale.

Tech and Product Internship
The New Story technology intern will help our team craft an amazing donor experience from end to end, analyze data to discover critical insights, and work on special projects to help solve our hairiest problems. We don’t believe interns should push around papers or run errands. Interns should be in the thick of things, joining and working with the core team to push our mission forward.

As a New Story intern, you’ll get to work on building communities and homes around the world. You’ll know each time you work that you’re helping a family in need. This is an internship for people who want to make a massive impact on the world. Read more about this amazing opportunity here.

Sirum Medical Internships
Every year $5 billion worth of unexpired prescription medicine in the U.S. is destroyed. Meanwhile, some 50 million Americans don’t fill their prescriptions because of cost.
SIRUM is a 501(c)(3) founded at Stanford University that uses technology to connect surplus medicine from pharmacies and health facilities with safety-net clinics. Like a Match.com for medicine, we connect medicine donors with clinics, and coordinate donation logistics like drug manifests, tracking and shipping.
We are hiring up to 1-2 part-time interns to commit a minimum of 5 hours per week, 8 weeks per quarter, in our offices (378 Cambridge Ave, Palo Alto, CA 94306). The intern will be an integral part of continuing our explosive expansion. We are looking for students interested in working at the intersection of state and local government, public health agencies, safety-net hospitals, outpatient clinics, health insurers, nursing homes, healthcare providers and patients.
