Mayor Finch Applauds Gov. Malloy, State Legislature for Increasing the Minimum Wage in Connecticut
This week, the Connecticut General Assembly became the first in the nation to pass legislation increasing the state’s minimum wage to $10.10 an hour, by 2017. Governor Dannel P. Malloy signed the bill into law Thursday evening.
The new law calls for a multi-year phase-in schedule of minimum wage increases. In 2015, hourly raises will rise to $9.15, reaching $9.60 an hour in 2015, and $10.10 in 2017.
In response, Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch made the following statement:
“I applaud Governor Malloy and state legislators for increasing the minimum wage in Connecticut. Families in Bridgeport and across our state deserve a fair shot at economic security and this measure does just that. Right now, nearly one in four people – and nearly one in three children – are living below the poverty line in our state’s largest city. That’s unacceptable and thankfully state legislators and the governor took a major step toward helping hardworking families make ends meet. But this measure not only helps parents and kids across our city and state, it will help drive our economy forward by putting additional resources in the hands of hard-working consumers.”

NCAA Hockey brings thousands to Bridgeport
Bridgeport, once again, is serving as host to the NCAA Hockey East Regionals this weekend. Thousands are expected to attend games being held on Friday and Saturday afternoon at Webster Bank Arena.
Mayor Bill Finch issued the following statement regarding this weekend's event:
“Me, my wife, and my kids love hockey. We go to the skating rink every weekend. But that’s not the only reason we’re thrilled Bridgeport is hosting the NCAA tournament this year. The tournament serves as a boost to our local economy, and showcases Webster Bank Arena, which has become one of the best sports and entertainment venues in the region. We hope those visiting the Park City enjoy our top-notch restaurants, and other downtown attractions. And we look forward to a weekend full of watching some first-class hockey in our first-class city.”

Neighborhood Fridays Hits the Hollow Neighborhood
Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch’s “Neighborhood Fridays,” an initiative kicked off earlier this month to make the Park City stronger and its neighborhoods cleaner, focused on The Hollow neighborhood on Friday.
The program, which is a collaborative effort between multiple city departments including Public Works, Anti-blight and Illegal Dumping, Neighborhood Revitalization and members of the Joint Inspection Committee, involves an aggressive clean-up effort, targeting a different neighborhood every Friday with crews working hard to pick up trash, fix potholes, re-paint street lines, and repair damaged signs.
Neighborhood Fridays has previously targeted the East Side, West End/Downtown, and East End. During the first three weeks of the program, the City has removed a total of 18.6 tons of illegal dumping, picked up 5.4 tons of paper, patched 100 potholes, and repaired 53 signs.

Bond Commission Approves $1.1 million for Bridgeport’s Discovery Museum
On Friday, the State Bond Commission – which is chaired by Governor Dannel P. Malloy – approved $1.1 for the Discovery Museum in Bridgeport to assist with improvements. In response, Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch made the following statement:
“My family loves the Discovery Museum. We regularly visit this Bridgeport gem. It’s a tremendous asset to the Park City and brings in around 100,000 visitors a year. That’s why we’re thankful to Governor Malloy, the State Bond Commission, and the Bridgeport delegation for ensuring the Discovery Museum will receive more than one-million dollars to assist with improvements to the site. These funds help ensure that future generations will be able to enjoy the museum, too.”
