The UCSF-Bay Area CFAR (Center for AIDS Research), funded by NIH since 1987, began its 35th year in September. Our Director, Monica Gandhi, MD, MPH, and the Directors and Leadership of our five funded Cores and two Scientific Working Groups will talk about new themes, aims, and plans for CFAR’s next five years. We’ll highlight ongoing and new CFAR core services and programs + how we can support you and your research!

Hi, my name is Lidia Rodriguez! I am currently majoring in Nutrition and Dietetics with an emphasis in Foods and Community. I am extremely passionate about preventative health and holistic care. I am currently a Diabetes Educator where I facilitate workshops on prevention and management. Through this work, I see how community support and learning from one another is vital in our journey towards mutual healing. I would like to become a Primary Care Physician who advocates for immigrant, underserved populations. I enjoy painting and spending as much time as I can with my family. I have a twin sister who is my whole world.

Hello! My name is Eduardo Hernandez, and my pronouns are he/him/his. I am a first-year master’s student in the Cell and Molecular Biology department. I am a first-year master’s student in the Cell and Molecular Biology department at San Francisco State University. I am part of Dr. Erica Sanchez’s Lab, where we study a cancer-causing virus called Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) and its viral G protein-coupled receptor (vGPCR). My project investigates the potential interaction between KSHV vGPCR and the understudied angiogenic proteins termed endoplasmic reticulum membrane complex subunit 10 (EMC10) and mannoside acetylglucosaminyltransferase 5 (MGAT5).

My name is Tiffany Chambers , and I am originally from Southern California. I am a Junior attending San Francisco State University majoring in Biochemistry. I will be continuing to finish completing a Bachelor of Science in this field at SFSU and I plan to graduate in May of 2023. I am currently actively involved in an academic research group that has a primary focus of protein analysis. I thoroughly enjoy research and development because I feel that it is fundamental. I plan on growing more knowledge and experience within the field of R&D in my future career path.

Hello, my name is Liz Nguyen and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I am a recent graduate from SFSU with a BA in Psychology and a Minor in Counseling. During my time as an undergrad, I was able to participate in a Law and Psychology lab that focused on understanding the power of societal and structural forces within the legal system, and the profound effects of punishment within society. I believe that my background in Legal Psychology has inspired me to continue to learn the ways in which research can be used as a form of social justice.
