Case Studies: Non-Cash and Complex Gifts

Business Interests (Privately-Held Shares)
John Jones spent his entire 40-plus year career working for a local, privately-held business in manufacturing. As a key stakeholder of the company (S-Corp), he acquired substantial ownership in company shares during his career. As John approached retirement, he and his professional advisor team discussed exit strategy options. Knowing that John was charitably inclined, John and his advisors worked with the Community Foundation to prepare a charitable plan that was in line with his upcoming retirement and that would also align with other planning goals.
By donating John’s S-Corp shares to the Community Foundation for the benefit of a donor advised fund, John was able to create a pool of charitable dollars to grant out to causes he cared about in his retirement years, while also avoiding the realization of substantial capital gains on his company shares. Additionally, this strategy helped offset some of the tax burden of cashing out the remainder of his company shares to provide assets for his retirement years.

Agricultural Gifts
Farming isn't a one-size-fits-all industry. Your client’s charitable giving strategy shouldn't be either. We accept a variety of agricultural assets and tools to help meet your clients' goals with assets already held. See the video below to learn about how Norm Verros utilized his farm equipment to support his community.

Private Foundation Conversion
Start-up costs, lack of privacy and limited tax deductibility related to private foundations often leads donors to establish a donor advised fund with the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines. In addition to alleviating administrative details, we can educate your clients about our community’s most pressing needs and promising opportunities, introduce your clients to charitable and community leaders and help your clients create a legacy of giving. Jim O’Halloran decided to move his private foundation to the Community Foundation for those reasons exactly.

Jim turned to the Community Foundation, where he found the organization’s administrative excellence and giving expertise was a perfect fit for the future needs of the family’s foundation. By transferring the assets of the private foundation to a family foundation fund held at the Community Foundation, Jim’s family members are serving as fund advisors and focusing on developing their skills in charitable giving, rather than the administrative work of operating a private foundation.
