Homecoming — The Encore Hits All the Right Notes as Alums Show Their Toro Pride

The sounds of live music and the scents of local food vendors filled the Sculpture Garden at CSUDH on June 22 as an estimated 500 alumni, faculty, administrators, and their family members marked Homecoming 2024 in an event dubbed The Encore.
Severe storm forecasts earlier in the year preempted a week of festivities originally scheduled in February. The warm June weather could not have been more accommodating as attendees relaxed in the shade, danced to the music of DW3 and the CSUDH Jazz Ensemble, or mingled with fellow alums in the beer and wine garden.

No Time To Waste: Toro Gets Her Psychology Degree at Just 19
From a young age, Mariah Sarabia understood that education was a vital lifeline to the future she envisioned for herself.
“I knew the value of higher education,” she recalls. “When my parents immigrated from Mexico, they didn’t have any education at all. My mom didn’t even speak English when they moved here.”

High-speed aerial photography is not something that CSUDH alumnus Jim Ross ever saw himself getting into. “Aerial photography was right in line with exotic dancing as jobs I never thought I would have in my lifetime,” he laughs.

Super Regional Loss Ends Another Strong Toro Softball Season
The Toro softball team suffered a tough 7-6 extra-inning loss to the Western Washington University Vikings in Game Three of the NCAA West Super Regional on Wednesday, May 15. The result eliminated CSUDH from the tournament and put an end to another stellar season.

CLASS NOTES
Recent accomplishments of fellow Toros.
Alexis Zamarripa (M.A. ‘14) has been named Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) at PIH Health Downey Hospital. In this capacity, she is responsible for executive oversight of the hospital’s nursing practice and operations. Zamarripa has been with PIH Health for 27 years.

Dr. Adam A. Porter (PhD ‘86) has been named co-executive director of the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing, an academic health research institute. Porter is also a professor of computer science at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP), and has served since 2015 as executive director of the Fraunhofer USA Center Mid-Atlantic, an applied research center affiliated with UMCP. 

Karl Waller (BA ‘84) opened The Brass Tap, a craft beer bar and entertainment venue franchise, which had its grand opening in June 2024. Waller, along with his wife and sister, are co-owners of the franchise, which is located in the Promenade at the Dunes in Marina, Calif.

IN MEMORIAM
Gemma Denise Cofield Oyewole (BA '88) (MA '98) passed away after a valiant battle with cancer. Oyewole earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree at CSUDH. She worked as a certified public accountant at the Los Angeles County Office of Education for three decades. 
Edwin P. Ott (BA ‘82) passed away in June 2024. Ott was born in the Bronx, New York, the second of five children. He and his family moved to California in 1960, where he spent his childhood and met the love of his life, Irene. Ott graduated from CSUDH with a business degree and successfully ran several prominent businesses as CFO. Ed loved to travel, with a special fondness for taking his family to Maui.
Allen R. Plit (BA ‘76) passed away at the age of 80. He served his country in the United States Air Force at numerous bases, in conjunction with the Boeing Company, and in the United States Civil Service. Plit was a passionate model railroader, loved classical music, and played the oboe and clarinet. 
Oscar Barreda (BA '88) passed away at the age of 101. Barreda served his country as a member of the US Coast Guard. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from CSUDH while working at Hughes Aircraft, Raytheon Inc., and the Boeing Corporation, where he retired.
