Changes, they come when you plan them, and often when you don’t. This coffee hour will be all about making the most of challenging circumstances, going green and becoming resilient. In 2015, Rob Hendrickson’s office flooded. The ceiling and floor were total losses, his business and life were greatly disrupted. Instead of getting angry and trying to quickly patch things back together, Rob took this disruption and used it as the perfect opportunity to green his office and make it better prepared for the next big rain. Come learn about the LED lighting, insulation, water, energy and waste conservation he undertook as a result of this major disruption to his business. You’ll get motivated, and also learn some of the dollars and cents details of the efforts he undertook.
This coffee hour will be an excellent opportunity to look into how sustainable change can happen at a business when planned, and unplanned, and how it can transform a business.
Wednesday, April 26, 8:00 - 9:00am, networking till 9:30

Watts and Watts of Savings!

David Scott of Ernie Smith Insurance has been a long-time participant in the GREAT Business Program. “I actually was part of meetings when Metro was forming “BRAG… Business Resource Assistance Group” back in the late 1990s. David has made resource conservation a part of his business from day one. Most recently he had a full LED lighting upgrade completed at his business. “The light is excellent, and the system will pay for itself in about 2 years, I’ll be saving money every month after that.” Upgrading your lighting to LED (Light Emitting Diode) is a smart way to reduce your energy usage, and with the price of LEDs coming down so much over the past few years, now is an excellent time to consider an upgrade. The Energy Trust of Oregon provides rebates on LED systems, and can connect you with trade allies who receive training and support from Energy Trust to stay up to date on the latest Energy Trust standards, incentives, and quality requirements.” In the City of Gresham, Chris Walker of PGE can also assist you in this process and provide insight for free.

Repair Cafés

Do you have a favorite sweater that's missing a button, or a toaster that mysteriously stopped working? Don't throw it away, Repair Cafés are here to help! A Repair Café is a free event where volunteers fix broken items such as clothing, bikes, and small appliances. While your item is being fixed, you will sit one-on-one with the fixer so you can learn how to troubleshoot in the future. Our next event is May 18th at Pathways Church 6-8pm.
At Gresham's October Repair Café, 90 people attended and the event was able to keep hundreds of pounds of material out of the landfill.
For more information about Gresham Repair Cafés, visit https://greshamoregon.gov/repaircafe/ or https://www.facebook.com/greshamrepaircafe/. If you have repair skills and would like to volunteer your time, please contact repaircafegresham@gmail.com or call 503-618-2694.
To find a repair event near you, visit http://repairpdx.org/regional-calendar/ to see a calendar of events throughout the Metro region.
