About the Garden
Established in 1916, UBC Botanical Garden curates a collection of ca. 12,000 plants, representing approximately 8,000 taxa from temperate regions around the world.

A Growing Affair, the evolution of the Garden’s popular and long-running annual Perennial Plant Sale, as the name suggests, includes more than just plants for sale. Designed to inform and empower plant lovers of all ages and to engage the local community with a deeper appreciation for all things growing, the event combines informative displays for both new and experienced gardeners with an unparalleled selection of plants available for purchase.

May is often advertised as the best time for flowers—you know the rhyme, April showers bring... but in Vancouver, May flowers are often just a continuation of April's bounty. Vancouver is usually cool, and often wet, but otherwise agreeable at this time of the year (unlike western Europe and eastern North America, which can suffer from both late frost and sweltering temperatures in May). Flowers and the tender young growth of all kinds of plants last much longer with cool and humid conditions. At this time, the new growth on a number of trees can be exceedingly ornamental. For example, the emerging leaves of mountain ashes (Sorbus species) are often surprisingly bright green. On the other hand, many worm-head trees (Meliosma species) have dull, yellow green leaves, but the vegetative (leaf) buds open at the same time, with the entire year's leaves all expanding simultaneously. The leaves are both unusual and eye-catching, with upright, hairy leaf stalks and drooping leaflets.

Shop in the Garden & Garden Centre
At the Shop in the Garden, you'll find spring in full swing, finally, with the arrival of some beautiful gardening weather.  The Garden Centre is bursting with colour and we have lots of variety and special things to tempt you with.  Mother's Day is just around the corner.....
 
Speaking of Mother's Day, some great gifts could be: a pair of very good quality pruning shears (or secateurs); a must for any gardener; new stock of Hartley & Marks exquisite journals and notebooks; for cooks, Sharon Hanna's follow-up cookbook to her best-seller "The Book of Kale", just-out "The Book of Kale & Friends".  Lots more ideas in the Shop, so come and have a look.  We're sure you'll find something that will bring about a smile.
 
Master Gardeners are in the garden centre every Sunday from 12-4, so bring your questions and ideas.
