September 26: Join the Joseph A. Unanue Latino Institute, Latin American and Latino/a studies, and the Department of Languages, Literatures and Culture in a Screening of Andres Wood’s Film Machuca and conversation with screenwriter Roberto Brodsky at 4 p.m. in Bethany Hall.

September 27: Come sing an original song, a cover, recite poetry or spoken word, play an instrument at SAB Presents: Open Mic Night - Hispanic Heritage Month Edition. This event will be in the outdoor Amphitheater at 7 p.m.

September 29: Join us in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month as OSE Presents: Food Truck Friday featuring Latin Bites. The first 200 students in line will receive a free serving of their choice. After 200 servings have been met, the truck will remain open for individual purchase. Line opens at noon and closes at 2:30 p.m.
- October 2: Stop by our Latino Physicians Day - Tabling on the Green at noon to learn more about Latino Physicians Day and learn why representation in medicine is important.

October 3: Join us at 5 p.m. in the UC Chancellor’s Suite as the famous Carlos Andrés Gómez performs spoken word and poetry that will explore and identify actionable strategies for making our campus and future health care providers more culturally responsive, affirming, accessible, and inclusive!

Save the Date: Hispanic Heritage Month Mass on October 15 at 8 p.m. in the Immaculate Conception Chapel. Mass will be celebrated in English and Spanish. Refreshments to follow. All are welcome.

Do you have a delicious family recipe, or a traditional dish you’d love to share? For Hispanic Heritage Month we are compiling a digital cookbook from campus and community partners in the Hispanic/Latinx diaspora. Students, administrators, faculty, priests, and staff are all welcome to participate.

- September 27: On this day, Orthodox Christians celebrate the “Elevation of the Holy Cross,” one of the twelve great feasts in the Orthodox Church year.
- September 28: Meskel is a Christian holiday in the Ethiopian Orthodox and Eritrean Orthodox churches.

September 29: The Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael is shared by Catholics, Anglicans and Lutherans. In Catholicism, St. Michael is considered the patron of police, paramedics and military personnel. He is also the patron of Ukraine. In many medieval universities, Michaelmas Day (as it was called in England) marked the beginning of the new school year and fall semester.

The Jewish festival of Sukkot begins sundown on September 29 to sundown on Saturday until October 7. Sukkot commemorates the forty-year period when the people of Israel wandered in the desert after leaving slavery in Egypt, living in temporary shelters as they traveled.

HolaFest is a cultural event celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in South Orange and Maplewood. The event includes several local food trucks, local restaurant offerings and specials, and a full array of music and performances on the main stage, located at the corner of Fairview Avenue and Irvington Avenue. Additionally, there will be free face painting and an interactive art project for the public along Irvington Avenue. This event is sponsored by South Orange Seton Village on Oct 14, 2023 at 4 p.m.
