MI Independent Citizens Redistricting Comission

The Office of Student Life and Student Senate are hosting the State of MI Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (MICRC) on Thursday 9/16 as a part of the MICRC College Tour. GVSU is one of 5 campuses in Michigan who have been invited to host. The purpose of this tour is to engage young voters in the redistricting process.
 
We are looking for faculty who would be interested in hosting the commissioners in their classrooms on 9/16 between 8am-11am. Faculty from various disciplines may be interested in the redistricting process, including Political Science, Public Administration, Geography, Sociology, Math, Liberal Studies, WGS, Area Studies and more.

Oakdale Neighbor's Computer Camp 2021

The Oakdale Neighbor’s organization partnered with GVSU professor Dr. Rui Niu-Cooper to host a Summer Learning Café Computer Camp on GVSU's campus. The Summer Learning Café program serves students from diverse urban backgrounds, including refugee students from Africa. To better support these students and encourage their continued learning, the Oakdale Neighbor’s Learning Café offers STEAM oriented camp activities for them. Dr. Rui Niu-Cooper and the Oakdale Neighbors were among our last Laker Effect Challenge winners.

Social Justice Begins With Me - Kickoff Event!

On August 27th, the Grand Rapids Public Library hosted a kickoff event for the Social Justice Begins With Me book club. The book club is designed for children ages 4-11 and explores social justice topics that impact their daily lives through children’s literature. It was founded by Paola Leon, associate professor of social work, and is a partnership between the Grand Rapids Public Library and the School of Social Work at Grand Valley. Volunteers from Grand Valley, the library and community serve as guest readers.

Akhil Amar: Constitution Day Celebration

America's most cherished document, the Constitution, has served as the nation's guiding light to government and civic engagement roles since its ratification in 1788. In the decades following ratification, statesmen and everyday Americans continued to grapple with the questions troubling the nation. In honor of Constitution Day, and on behalf of Grand Valley State University, the Hauenstein Center is proud to welcome Akhil Amar to discuss his new book, The Words That Made Us on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at 7:00pm in the Loosemore Auditorium.

Michigan Parkinson Foundation Walk

On September 25, the Michigan Parkinson Foundation will be hosting a walk at the Eberhard Center to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson's disease. 
Funds raised from the Walk will enable the Michigan Parkinson Foundation to continue providing valuable programs and services that assist the 30,000 people in Michigan with Parkinson’s.

2021 Progessive/Conservative Summit

Hosted as part of the Hauenstein Center’s Common Ground Initiative, this summit brings together leading scholars and writers of different intellectual traditions and political persuasions, to discuss how the collision of progressivism and conservatism shapes, has shaped, and will continue to shape our national identity. The event will take place at the Devos Center on October 1 and 2.
