Spiritual Reflection: Mass of the Holy Spirit
A Message from University Chaplain Thomas Ryan, Ph.D.
I love the Mass of the Holy Spirit. I think you might as well. For centuries, Jesuit colleges and universities have opened the academic year with such a mass. We do so at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 5 in Holy Name of Jesus Church and streamed live online.
Faith involves the intellect and belief. But we are not just heads. We are also embodied, and our bodies also yearn to experience God. At daily 12:30 p.m. Mass in our new Chapel of St. Ignatius and Gayle and Tom Benson Jesuit Center, bodies encounter Christ’s presence in the Eucharist and can respond in thanksgiving—verbally and through sitting, standing, and kneeling.
| |
At every Mass in Holy Name of Jesus Church, architecture and art engage bodies and all our senses as good. The Mass of the Holy Spirit does so even more through the rich diversity of students, faculty, and staff who contribute. At this Mass, we are surrounded with a massive length of red fabric symbolizing the embrace of the Holy Spirit who loves and inspires. Bodies dance, voices sing, musicians play (gloriously), preachers announce the Good News of God’s unfailing love. All of this is meant to assure us experientially and intellectually of God’s love so that we in turn can be sources of inspiration for a world in such need of it. I hope you can join us!

Ignatian Life Communities (ILCs) |
Ignatian Life Communities (ILCs) are weekly student-led small groups that discuss life/faith and are a way to take time out of the week to reflect, relax, and remind students of who they are and where they’re headed. Based in Ignatian spirituality, ILCs are open to any students looking for a great community to find God in all things. Students can register to join an ILC now through September 6. Please contact University Minister for Communal Reflection Hunter Darrouzet at hrdarrou@loyno.edu if you have any questions.
Each residence hall is occupied by at least one Resident Minister—lay or religious professionals who provide community and support rooted in our Jesuit values to our residential students. Every week, each Resident Minister hosts a “sweet-n-greet” in their apartments or in the lobbies of their residence halls. These are great ways to meet other students in a supportive environment. We hope to notice, name, and get to know your students at these gatherings or around the buildings. Questions about the Resident Ministry program can be directed to Ken Weber, Associate Director of Ministry, at kweber@loyno.edu.

Loyola students, pictured in front of Buckingham Palace, spent three weeks in London this summer as part of the inaugural Mass Communication Study Abroad Session. Prof. Lisa Collins and Dr. Cathy Rogers led students on tours of the CBS News London bureau and PR agencies The Propeller Group and FleishmanHillard, visited multiple museums, took in a show at the Globe Theatre, explored Oxford and Cambridge, went back in time to the birth of BBC TV and the glory days of Fleet Street and, of course, had afternoon tea.

HOWL! Welcome the Class of 2028 to the Wolf Pack. We can't wait to see what our new students will accomplish in their time at Loyola.
