 Plein Air 10-day Art Event Scheduled for May 1-11
 More than 20 nationally acclaimed artists will gather on Florida's Forgotten Coast to participate in the 9th annual Forgotten Coast en Plein Air Invitational, America's Great Paint-Out, May 1-11, 2014.  The event includes 5 exhibits across the coast, daily artist demonstrations, workshops, art sales and a series of public receptions. The Apalachicola School of Art continues a series of art workshops this summer.
 
Tea ching basic principals of portraiture by painting from a live model.
 
Spend 4 days working en plein air with American Impressionist Lori Putnam, capturing the culture and history of Apalachicola.

Forgotten Coast PaddleJam May 16-18 
Grab your kayak and head to the coast May 16-18 and join in what organizers hope will be a world-record attempt to gather the largest number of kayaks together in one floating mass to break the current Guiness world record. Watch a video preview of the event here. The three-day Forgotten Coast PaddleJam event is sponsored by the Forgotten Coast Paddle Club.  The Guiness World record attempt is just one activity planned as part of the area-wide fund-raising event featuring paddle sports, music and food. Other activities planned include kayak and SUP races and live music throughout the county. Click here for details.
 

 Turtle Season Begins 
 May 1 marks the beginning of  loggerhead sea turtle nesting season on St. George Island. It is the season when local volunteer turtlers begin walking the beach in order to find, mark and protect turtle nests and when homeowners and visitors are educated about turtle friendly house lighting. Visitors interested in learning about sea turtle nesting can visit the St. George Island Visitor's Center (at the St. George Island Lighthouse Park) to see a turtle display and pick up turtle information.
 
Take a Nature Class
You can learn more about our area's resources by taking a class this month at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (ANERR) Visitor Center in Eastpoint. ANERR's environmental education and training center will host a free bat talk on May 8, and a session on Birds of the Panhandle on May 22. All Both programs run from 2-3 p.m and are free. The ANERR's Visitor Center is open Tuesday-Saturday 9:00-4:30 and admission is free. For more info call ANERR at 670-7700. Click here for details.

Fishing Tourneys
Here are a few of the upcoming fishing tournaments scheduled throughout the county.
June 7
Fisherman's Choice Youth Fishing Tournament. Charles and Rex Pennycuff host the annual Fisherman’s Choice Youth Fishing Tournament for kids 16 and under. The kids will fish for fresh and saltwater species.
June 14-15
Father's Day Weekend Event with more than $50,000 in cash and prizes. 
June 7-8
$10,000 payout. 1-10 places. C-Quarters Marina, Carrabelle.
 July 19
Youth Fishing Tournament, C-Quarters Marina. Open to all kids 16 and under. Registration required on site.
August 2-3
Fundraiser for the Luekemia Society. C-Quarters Marina, Carrabelle.

Historic Apalachicola Home & Garden Tour May 2-3
Apalachicola's annual home and garden tour is scheduled for May 2-3 and will feature a variety of homes ranging from century-old houses to charming bungalows and contemporary homes. For more information, click here. Watch a video preview of the event here.

Historic Society Hosts Spring Ghostwalk May 3
Keep the history hike theme going May 3 and join the Apalachicola Historic Society for their annual Spring Ghost Tour walk of the Historic Chestnut Street Cemetery in Apalachicola. The walk will be held from 7-9 pm. (ET).
 
Concert in the Park May 18
The Ilse Newell Concert series wraps up its 2014 season of concerts with its annual favorite concert in the park. The event will feature the Franklin County School Band and will begin at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 18 at the Lafayette Park in Apalachicola. Click here for details.

 Golf Gone Wild Tournament May 3 at St. James Bay Golf Resort
The 2014 Golf Gone Wild Golf Tournament to benefit the Florida Wild Mammal Association (FWMA) is set for Saturday, May 3 at the St. James Bay Golf Resort located east of Carrabelle on Hwy 98. The Tournament will be an 18-hole Florida Scramble with a shotgun start at 10:00 A.M. Four person teams will compete for  cash and prizes. Click here to learn more.
