Fairchild Wheeler Interdistrict High School Campus "A Green Leader"
The newly opened Fairchild Wheeler Interdistrict High School Campus has been recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council with LEED Gold certification.
The Hartford Courant spoke with Mayor Bill Finch about the school, which is the first high school built in Bridgeport in 50 years.
"The school is a living breathing example of how schools should be built – to be in harmony with nature and it's surroundings. It's practical in the energy saving and environmental sense," said Mayor Finch. "Our schools needed an improved learning enviornment in order to facilitate training in STEM curriculum for techninal and engineering jobs of the future."
According to the mayor, 40 percent of the building was constructed with recycled material from Bridgeport.
"Some of the same material people in bridgeport were recycling curbside now make up things like ceiling fans and light fixtures at the high school. It's very full circle," Finch said. The Mayor believes Fairchild Wheeler is just one example of the many ways in which Bridgeport is winning the race to zero waste.
