More Common Core Teacher Videos Released
Next Round Announced

The Ayers Institute for Teacher Learning and Innovation is excited to announce our newly released videos, facilitator resources, and a second round of videos coming this summer and fall.

Our newly uploaded INVEST videos include: 1st Grade Reading, 3rd Grade Social Studies, Algebra I, Chemistry I, English II, Professional Learning Community (PLC) Planning, Professional Learning Community (PLC) Reflection.

We are thrilled to offer a wide range of subjects and grade levels, and especially happy about the PLC videos, which will help your pre-service teachers understand the importance of collaboration in terms of improved student outcomes and increased teacher satisfaction.  The addition of the secondary lessons brings a well-rounded, practical approach to CCSS implementation at the upper grades.  In fact, two of the secondary lessons, English II and Chemistry I, are the result of the collaboration we see in the PLC videos, adding another layer of significance to the teacher collaboration we captured there.

Our TEAM section in the Facilitator’s Guide is another exciting edition to the INVEST Year 2 Facilitator’s Guide.  For all the videos added this year, we have engaged three certified TEAM evaluators to view and score the lessons.  The scores and evaluator notes are included, and we believe they will be a valuable resource for your teacher candidates.  The Ayers Institute has also created activities that one could use with students to familiarize themselves with the rubric and to understand the connection between TEAM and CCSS.

All of the newly released videos and Facilitator's Guide additions can be found in our INVEST Video Library.

Finally, we are anxious to inform you of the videos we are currently creating: TEAM, 1st Grade Reading, 3rd Grade Reading, High School Career and Technical Education (CTE), High School Social Studies

For the TEAM video, we have engaged Dr. Candice McQueen, Senior Vice President, Dean of the College of Education, and Executive Director of the Ayers Institute for Teacher Learning and Innovation at Lipscomb University, Dr. Darwin Mason, Assistant Principal at Cedar Grove Elementary and Certified TEAM Evaluator, Dr. Hank Staggs, Former Principal, Certified TEAM Evaluator, and Program Director of Leadership at Lipscomb University, and Catherine Stephens, Associate Director for Teaching and Learning, and Certified TEAM Evaluator in Franklin Special School District.

These experts have viewed all the videos from Year 1 and Year 2 and will provide perspectives for teachers and leaders on the rationale behind TEAM, the focus of the TEAM rubrics, and what to look for when gathering evidence for the descriptors on the Instruction Rubric.

This suite of videos is set to be released in summer and fall 2014.

Common Core, Interdisciplinary Lesson Plans integrate Nashville Public Art
In an exciting partnership between the Ayers Institute and Metro Arts, with collaboration from professionals in the Arts department at Cheekwood Art and Gardens, ten area teachers have been named to the Metro Arts Teacher Cadre. The Teacher Cadre is comprised of two teams—each including a math, language arts, science, social studies, and art teacher.  The teams are working together to create high-quality, interdisciplinary and Common Core aligned units, focused on the public art installation at Edmondson Park.  Each of these lessons will go through a peer review process and will be ready to publish by the end of April.  Read about the team and the artists on our  Metro Arts page.
When the team last met, they walked the grounds at Edmondson Park, met with officials of MDHA and the Oasis Center and worked with Ayers Institute Program Directors, Rachael Milligan and Karen Marklein on how to craft a lesson around on Common Core.  On June 3, the Teacher Cadre will facilitate a professional development training session for other area teachers so that the public art interdisciplinary units can be disseminated and put into immediate practice.  Look for more information on how to participate soon!
The Cadre will meet again on March 31, in a very special session in which they will get to work on an art project with artist Lonnie Holley.  Holley will also host a question and answer session with the Cadre.  The final meeting of the Cadre before the June professional development session will be on April 10.  The art installation at Edmondson Park is expected in late spring/early summer, 2014.
Governor's Innovation Fund will provide Open Online Teacher Prep Courses
The Ayers Institute for Teacher Learning and Innovation has begun development of what are expected to be the institute’s first free MOOCs (massive open online courses).  The 10 online courses will prepare teachers to utilize best practices in the classroom including implementing the Common Core State Standards.  The project is funded through a grant from the Governor’s Innovation Fund of the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.  The courses will be designed to incorporate  easily into teacher preparation programs in universities across the state or for teachers to complete the non-facilitated versions on their own.  Learn more about the specific course topics on our MOOC page.
