Breastfeeding Promotion: Delivery & Post-partum
WAVE 1 & WAVE 2 Meeting
Through support from a five-year grant from the Centers for Disease Control awarded to the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH), we are pleased to offer you the opportunity to join with TIPQC as well as facilities across Tennessee, and the Tennessee Hospital Association (THA), in a quality improvement project aimed at improving maternity care practices and the health of mothers and infants in our state through support of breastfeeding. Participation in Wave 2 of the Breastfeeding Promotion: Delivery Project will also help you to improve your performance on The Joint Commission Perinatal Core Measure 5.
Wave 1 and Wave 2 teams are encouraged to join the informational and training meeting on Tuesday, April 22, 10 am - 3 pm CT at the THA offices, 5201 Virginia Way, Brentwood.  Physician champions, unit managers, lactation consultants, nurses, registered dietitians, quality assurance technicians, and others who will form your local improvement team for this project are encouraged to attend.  Support for travel costs is available.

Why Join this Project?
  • Tennessee’s breastfeeding rates fall well below the Healthy People 2020 goals for our nation
  • On the CDC survey of Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition and Care (mPINC), Tennessee ranks only 46 out of 53 states and territories
  • The Joint Commission now requires measurement of Exclusive Breastfeeding at Hospital Discharge for all birth facilities with > 1100 births (Perinatal Core 05).
  • The Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, developed by UNICEF and WHO are evidenced-based practices known to increase both breastfeeding initiation and duration.
  • 60% of mothers who intend to breastfeed do not reach their breastfeeding goals.
  • TIPQC “Breastfeeding Promotion Project:  Delivery, Wave 1” has enrolled 12 hospitals since July 2012, and through reliable implementation of as many of the Ten Steps as possible through a Quality Improvement Collaborative, we have seen a 20% aggregate increase in our state-wide exclusive breastfeeding rate at discharge!
65 Hospitals Recognized for participation in the Reduction Of Early Elective Deliveries Project
TN birthing hospitals were awarded congratulatory banners for decreasing the number of babies delivered electively between 37 to 39 weeks gestation to 5 percent or less and have maintained this goal for a minimum of six consecutive months. In May 2012, nearly 16 percent of all Tennessee deliveries that occurred prior to 39 weeks gestation were considered elective. Today, the number of early elective deliveries has been reduced by almost 85 percent.
Penny Collins, Director of Quality, Takoma Regional Hospital, Greeneville, and Harry Nelson, MD, OB-GYN physician, Women’s Center of Greeneville, are pictured with a banner congratulating Takoma for its participation in the statewide “Healthy Tennessee Babies are Worth the Wait” initiative. The banner recently was presented to the hospital and 64 other hospitals across the state.

According to Chip Heath's Switch principles, in order to motivate the elephant:
  1. Analyze your way into change by using charts, graphs, spreadsheets
  2. Help the elephant "find the feeling" in order to feel excited about the change such as the glove shrine
  3. Shrink the change by figuring out a way to recognize small successes
