PRESIDENT'S CABINET LETTER
| |
Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Friends of De La Salle,
Beginning with the February issue of the Spartan Spotlight, De La Salle President's Cabinet members will provide letters to families with updates from their school leadership areas. This month, Lynne Jones, Vice President for Finance, provides a budget update and shares some financial highlights from this school year.
Budget season is in full swing as we plan for the 2022-23 school year. The goal – and challenge – is always to compensate employees fairly, while keeping tuition affordable for our De La Salle families. In 2022, cost of living increases, and labor market shortages are putting upward pressure on our compensation costs, which comprise 70 percent of our annual operating budget. Fortunately, we enter the budget season in a position of financial strength thanks to disciplined spending and strategic investing and financing decisions, so that we can meet the challenge without overburdening our families. We will announce soon the tuition increase for next school year.
Financial Highlights as of December 2021:
- $101 million in total assets
- Endowment assets totaling $29 million, which generate approximately $1 million in tuition assistance funding annually
- Over $4 million in needs-based tuition assistance was granted to one in three students
- Operating and capital reserves at strategic target levels
- Annual audits resulting in ranking as “High Performer” among peer schools
- Human capital – our faculty and employees are our most valuable asset. The longevity of the faculty and the number of alumni teachers are both testaments to their passion for teaching our students in the Lasallian tradition
- 100 percent giving to De La Salle by all employees, the Alumni Board, and the Board of Trustees
De La Salle is positioned well for the future to continue providing our hallmark Lasallian Catholic, college-preparatory education and co-curricular programs. As we explore and implement strategic curricular and facilities innovations in the future through a Strategic Planning process, De La Salle remains committed to forming Men of Faith, Integrity, and Scholarship.
Vice President for Finance Mrs. Lynne Jones

Junior Prom and Senior Ball Update
| |
Families and Students of the Class of 2023 and 2024, we wanted to give you some updates to the upcoming Junior Prom and Senior Ball.
Venue Change In an effort to include as many of our students as possible, De La Salle and Carondelet made the decision to move our Junior Prom from the Overlook Oakland and our Senior Ball from, at first, the SF Galleria, and then, the Overlook Oakland, to both dances being held on the Saint Mary’s College campus. Because of the multiple venue changes and the increase of event hosting, prices on these dances increased.
Junior Prom Junior Prom will be held on Saturday, March 26 from 7:30-10:30 p.m. at Saint Mary’s College of California. Estimated tickets will be $130 per person and will go on sale soon. Be sure to check the Daily Announcements and the DLS Dances webpage for updates as information becomes available.
Senior Ball Senior Ball will be held on Saturday, April 30, 7:30-10:30 p.m. at Saint Mary’s College of California. Estimated tickets will be $130 per person and will go on sale soon. Be sure to check the Daily Announcements and the DLS Dances webpage for updates as information becomes available.
COVID-19 Requirements Anyone who attends Junior Prom or Senior Ball must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or test negative for COVID-19 with an antigen test 72 hours prior to the dance.
- DLS students can upload proof of vaccination to SchoolAdmin (if they haven’t already).
- Antigen tests must be administered by a healthcare provider or during one of our on-campus testing dates. De La Salle will provide testing on Thursday and Friday prior to both Prom and Ball.
- If the COVID-19 test is done through an outside provider, proof of the negative test must be submitted to the Dean's Office within 72 hours prior to the dance or provided at the door to gain entrance to the venue.
- Non-De La Salle and non-Carondelet guests will need to bring both a photo ID and their proof of vaccination or negative test to gain entrance to the venue.
An individual is considered fully vaccinated at least two weeks after receiving a second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or the first dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Everything you need to know will be on our DLS Dances page, which will have information on ticket sales, guest passes, and COVID-19 requirements from our chosen venue. You can email Michael Aquino (aquinom@dlshs.org), Director of Campus Life and Culture, with any questions regarding these events.
Thank you for your collaboration and patience as we work to provide these fun, highly anticipated events.

“When you love someone, you have to offer that person the best you have. The best thing we can offer another person is our true presence.” Thich Nhat Hanh (RIP – Passed away 1/22/2022)
“I discovered that I am not alone.” “Each one of us has a very unique and moving story.” “Now I know, I am truly loved.” “I now understand the meaning of BROTHERHOOD.”
Reflections were shared by seniors who returned from a Kairos retreat. The last Kairos retreat will take place at the end of March. Kairos is a truly unique gift for our seniors (and juniors).
- Guided by Campus Ministry leaders, parents and sons will come together on the weekend of February 5-6 to celebrate their special sacred relationship at the Vallombrosa Retreat Center in Menlo Park.
- Beginning January 24th-February 6th, the community focus is on Mental Health Awareness – via Service Leadership – culminating in the Laps for Life (Feb. 5) event which very clearly demonstrates our community’s commitment to Jesus’ call in the “Great Commandment” to love God and love our neighbor, especially the “least of our sisters and brothers” that Jesus makes clear in “The Final Judgment” in Matthew 25:31-46.
- Don’t forget to sign up for the Mother/Son Liturgy and Brunch that will take place on Sunday, March 6 at 10 a.m. You can register here
