Dear Loyola Community,
We're a few weeks into the school year, a time when the novelty has worn off, and we dig into the real work in our pursuit of knowledge. There's no way around it; this time can be tough. While it's tempting to lose focus, I was recently reminded of the wisdom in the words of Daniel Berrigan's poem, "My Help, My Hope," which I read at convocation.
"I lift my eyes to you, my help, my hope." In the poem's opening lines, we are encouraged to turn our gaze upward, beyond the confines of our immediate concerns, and to acknowledge the vastness of the world around us. These words remind us that there is something greater than ourselves, a force that sustains us, inspires us and moves us.
As members of the university community, it's easy to become engrossed in our assignments and deadlines, but it's also essential to step back and appreciate the broader perspective of our journey. Let us remember that our collective efforts are part of a larger mission. We are not only students, faculty, and staff but stewards of knowledge and builders of a better future. We have a responsibility to ourselves and future generations to make the most of the opportunities our education affords us today. I encourage you all to set lofty academic goals, build strong and supportive communities, lean on the resources available to you, and lift your eyes for hope and encouragement.
At the same time, I want to assure you that the leaders of this university are also lifting their eyes and working hard to think more strategically about our future. We are looking for new and creative ideas to improve how we operate, how we communicate, and how we serve students, faculty, and staff. We are asking new questions to ensure Loyola continues to be a place of growth, discovery, and transformation. Let us allow our higher purpose to guide us and help us navigate today's challenges as we work to prepare for a brighter future.
Peace and blessings,
Dr. Xavier Cole
President
