By including the Community Foundation in their estate plans, your clients can ensure our community’s needs and opportunities will be supported for generations to come. Charitable estate planning could also lessen the burden of taxes on their family and may provide an opportunity for estate tax savings.
SAMPLE LANGUAGE TO INCLUDE IN YOUR ESTATE PLAN
Making a Legacy Gift to the Community Foundation’s Grantmaking Program: The Better Together Fund
A gift to the Better Together Fund is a gift to the community today and into the future. Because the Better Together Fund is a permanent endowment for the community, your clients' support will make an impact for generations to come.
Use this language to gift specifically to this fund: “I give, devise and bequeath _____________________ (describe dollar amount, property to be given, or proportion of residuary estate) to the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, a nonprofit corporation located in Des Moines, Iowa 50309, tax identification number 42-6139033, to benefit the Better Together Fund (the Community Foundation’s grantmaking program).”
Making a Gift to a Specific Cause or Fund
Alternatively, clients may establish an endowment for a specific purpose through their estate by stating, “I give, devise and bequeath ______________ (describe dollar amount, property to be given, or proportion of your residuary estate) to the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, a nonprofit corporation located in Des Moines, Iowa 50309, tax identification number 42-6139033, to be added to the __________________ Fund, a component fund of the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, of which distribution and spending policy instructions are already provided.”
Provisions for Community Foundation County Affiliate Donors
If your client lives in one of our affiliate communities, the language above may be amended to state “to the (name of Community Foundation affiliate here), an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines...”
When clients are making a planned gift, please contact us when they choose to name the Community Foundation as a beneficiary so that we can ensure their charitable intentions are fulfilled.
