Congratulations to Dr. Sarah Rhoads, who has been selected as a Fellow of Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN). This designation recognizes nurse leaders who have made substantive and sustained contributions to the health of women and newborns beyond the expectations of their role. They have demonstrated outstanding contributions to clinical practice, research, education, advocacy, or policy at the regional, national, or global level that is reflective of AWHONN’s mission and vision. Dr. Rhoads will be inducted as a fellow during the organization’s convention June 7-11 in Phoenix, AZ. #UTHSC #nursing

Jarrod Fortwendel, PhD, Professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy & Translational Science at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Pharmacy, discusses his research on developing and enhancing new treatments to fight infections caused by the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus. The UT Health Science Center College of Pharmacy is a top research institution named No. 6 in 2023 for research grants from the National Institutes of Health. Tailoring anti-cancer therapy to target cancer cell but not healthy cells has been a longstanding challenge for health care professionals, specifically when combating many solid and brain cancers. However, in a new paper co-authored by University of Tennessee-Health Science Center College of Medicine Professor Stephen Gottschalk, MD, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital’s scientists have identified 156 potential targets for chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T–cell immunotherapy. After four years and over 200,000 diagnostic tests, the Molecular/COVID Lab closed following a decreased volume of COVID-19 testing. Established during the spring of 2020, the Molecular/COVID Lab was one of only a dozen academic medical centers in the country to receive an Emergency Use Authorization from the FDA allowing it to create it’s own tests to determine who was infected and who was not.
