COVID Update from the Asia Pacific Region: The RBA advised the Consumer Payment Behaviour Survey is conducted every three years so they don’t have a direct update on the 2019 pre-Covid figure for cash use from that particular survey (Research Discussion Paper). The RBA would expect to do the next wave of the survey in the second half of 2022.

In terms of some other recent publications that may be of interest include:

Some colleagues in NI authored a Bulletin article earlier this year that discussed demand for cash during COVID, including a qualitative survey on cash use (Graph 6; Box A)
Assistant Governor Michele Bullock gave a speech titled ‘Panic, Pandemic and Payment Preferences’ mid-last year
RBAs regular Retail Payments Statistics collection has data on trends in the use of credit and debit cards, cheques, and ATM cash withdrawals.
