Ciao, Happy Saturday Bruce!
Back in February, our “Love Letter to Italy” newsletter edition highlighted some of the more favorable areas of Italy to explore, encompassing hidden gems, experiences and insider tips. Our focus was not only insight for everyone interested in this magical country, but it underscored Italy as one of our favorite destinations to visit, host and create memorable, customized experiences! So much so that Italy makes up a good 30% of our entire portfolio.
And with all of the pent up, post Covid travel, Italy is as popular as ever – but this is also true for travel abroad in general. We are seeing high demand for the rest of Europe, Southeast Asia and everywhere in between. And because of this demand, we are also witnessing higher prices, larger crowds, fuller flights, and extended shoulder seasons.
So, to that end, we thought we should share some alternative, charming European destinations that you may want to consider over the more popular places to avoid some of the crowds.
French Flair Beyond the Eiffel Tower: While Paris is undeniably romantic, consider the allure of Bordeaux. This historic city boasts charming squares, a UNESCO-listed Old Town, and, of course, world-renowned vineyards. Wine lovers can indulge in tastings and tours, while everyone will be enchanted by the city's relaxed pace and laid-back atmosphere.
Bonus tip – consider pairing a trip to Bordeaux with a few day stay across the border in San Sebastian, Spain, which is a foodie’s paradise and has as many absurdly inexpensive Pintxos (Basque version of Tapas) bars as they do Michelin star restaurants, the latter which has the highest concentration per area outside of Kyoto, Japan!
Sun-Kissed Shores Minus the Crowds: The Greek Isles beckon, but for a more intimate experience, set sail for Santorini's little sister, Anafi. Here, whitewashed houses cling to dramatic cliffsides, overlooking crystal-clear waters. Hike volcanic landscapes, savor fresh seafood in tavernas, and soak up the tranquility of this untouched paradise. Not to mention the price of lodging and food is considerably lower.
Art & History with a Local Twist: Instead of jostling for views of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, delve into the artistic riches of Bologna, Italy. Renowned for its medieval architecture and vibrant university culture, Bologna offers world-class museums, delectable cuisine (think rich ragùs and creamy gelato!), and a contagious student energy. There are plenty of cooking classes to experience the pleasure of creating and authentic dish of pasta and Bolognese sauce from scratch!
Speaking of Italy, think about Tuscany's Dream - Cinque Terre vs. Porto Ercole: Cinque Terre's coastline and allure is undeniable, but for a less crowded escape, consider Porto Ercole. Four hours south of Cinque Terre, Porto Ercole is nestled on Italy's stunning Maremma coast, this charming port town boasts medieval charm, secluded coves, and delectable seafood. This truly is one of Italy’s underrated, hidden gems.
Beyond the Canals of Amsterdam: Embrace the elegant charm of Stockholm, Sweden. This city, built on 14 islands, offers a delightful mix of history and modernity. Explore the Gamla Stan (Old Town) with its cobbled streets and colorful buildings, or take a boat tour through the picturesque archipelago!
Spanish Splendor: Barcelona vs. Girona: Barcelona's buzz is unmatched, but Girona offers a captivating alternative. This medieval gem boasts a well-preserved old town, a Jewish Quarter steeped in history, and a vibrant culinary scene. Girona is about an hour and 15 minute drive from Barcelona, but you can take the train and be there in less than 90 minutes.
Swiss Serenity: Lake Como vs. Lake Lucerne: Lake Como's beauty is undeniable, but Lake Lucerne offers a more relaxed alternative. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and charming villages, Lucerne provides opportunities for hiking, biking, and soaking up breathtaking scenery. Frankly, we would recommend doing both if possible!
This is just a small taste of Europe's secret havens! Let us craft your dream itinerary, taking you to charming towns, breathtaking landscapes, and hidden cultural gems. And of course, if you still are dreaming of the more popular, dream locations, we certainly have the experience, insight and relationships to ensure an amazing experience, nonetheless.
In our next newsletter, we'll unveil insider tips on saving money and navigating many of these off-the-beaten-path destinations.
Until then, stay curious and keep exploring!
Fondly, Anca and Bruce

Malta, often overshadowed by its flashier neighbor Italy, offers a unique experience brimming with cultural intrigue and sun-kissed charm. Sure, the Colosseum is awe-inspiring, but Malta boasts prehistoric marvels like the megalithic temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra, silent sentinels standing for over 5,000 years. Malta's magic goes far deeper than picture-perfect beaches.
Wander the narrow streets of Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a fortified city crammed with baroque splendor. Climb the bastions for panoramic views of the harbor or explore the Grandmaster's Palace, a testament to the island's rich past. Take a bus and in under 40 minutes you'll be exploring the fortified city of Mdina, a maze of winding streets and grand palazzos that transport you back to a bygone era. Delve into the mysterious Hypogeum, a subterranean necropolis that chills and enthralls in equal measure. Malta is a living museum, where every corner whispers stories of empires risen and fallen.
But, Malta isn't just for history buffs. Be prepared to share the island with its laid-back charm and welcoming locals. Unlike the bustling crowds of Rome, Malta offers a slower pace, perfect for unwinding on golden-sand beaches like Mellieħa Bay or Paradise Bay. Keep an eye out for the colorful luzzu, traditional Maltese fishing boats, bobbing gently in the crystal-clear water. Adventurers can explore hidden coves by kayak or scuba dive in the azure depths, discovering a world teeming with marine life. And for an ever slower pace, consider taking a 25 minute Ferry over to Gozo island, the second largest island of 21 that make up the Maltese archipelago. On Gozo you can explore its pristine beaches, visit temple ruins, and enjoy a multitude of hiking paths.
Foodies will find their paradise in Malta. Indulge in the freshest seafood imaginable, from succulent octopus stew to pan-fried swordfish. Savor the national dish, Fenek (rabbit), or try Pastizzi, flaky pastries filled with ricotta or peas - the perfect beachside snack. As the sun dips below the horizon, witness the breathtaking spectacle of the fortified city walls bathed in the golden light of dusk. For travelers seeking an alternative to the well-trodden path of Italy, Malta offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. With its warm hospitality, stunning scenery, and delicious cuisine, Malta promises an unforgettable escape.
