Interview: Colton Dixon discusses new album ‘Identity’ and future (Includes interview)

His third studio album Identity was released on March 24. The album is split into three separate parts: mind, body and spirit, where each section of the CD is divided by its own musical interlude. “The hardest thing to do is choosing songs for the record since I love all of them. I split it into three sections, which helped me narrow down the options. I love the journey that it takes you on musically, it starts really pop and high-energy and then it goes into more rock and edge. It is cool how it all worked out,” he said.

Dixon’s new single “All The Matters” is quickly climbing the radio charts, and he is about focusing on the important things in life instead of getting caught up in finding our identity in how much money we make or the kind of car we drive.

Dixon is packing arenas across the country for Winter Jam tour alongside Crowder and Britt Nicole. As a popular American Idol alum (Top 7 from season 11), Dixon returned to Idol one last time last year to perform his No. 1 single “Through All Of It” for the American Idol series finale. “We loved that show since season one. I was honored to be a part of that last show. It was really cool to be in celebration with everybody with what American Idol had accomplished. It was a great way to end the show,” he said.

“The Other Side” is a track on the album related to loss of a loved one, and it’s very personal to both Dixon and Annie; moreover, it is the song that he claimed as his personal favorite. His wife had lost her 22-year old brother a few years back, and it addresses the topic of death from a unique perspective. “When I first met Annie, she had just recently lost her brother, and just seeing how her and her family walked through that with grace was amazing to witness,” he said. “Seeing them stand on the side of victory was really admiring. The whole song is about what the other side looks like.”

The singer and his wife Annie recently celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary together. In the future, Dixon hopes to embark on another tour this fall. “It is going to be a big one,” he hinted.

An special moment for Dixon was singing “Undeniable” with music superstar TobyMac. “That was so cool. I’ve looked up to Toby for a long time. When he asked me to play and sing that with him, I was like ‘yes, let’s do that.’ I love that song,” he said.

He listed Lacey Sturm, the former lead singer of Flyleaf, as his dream female duet choice. “That would be awesome. I love her voice,” he said.
