Interview with Urban Rescue

Interview with Urban Rescue April 25, 2016

Recently, I chatted with Jordan Frye of Urban Rescue about the band’s new album, Wild Heartset to be released on May 6th.

I quickly fell in love with this album, especially their single “His Name“. Jordan’s parents divorced when he was in high school, and his mother was diagnosed with Leukemia shortly afterwards. He’s been through his share of heartache, his faith has been tested and the pain has pushed him closer towards God. There’s a saying that suffering will either make you bitter or better, and the trails Jordan has been through have given him a desire to seek to push others closer to Christ through music. Urban Rescue is the first band to be signed with Rend Family Records – a partnership between Irish worship band Rend Collective and Capitol Christian Music Group.  One of my favorite things about Urban Rescue is the evident tenderness and authenticity in their music and I’m excited for this album to be released. Pre-buy it here.

“Our mission as Urban Rescue is to see things through the lenses and the love of Christ.”

What’s your goal with Wild Heart?

Jordan: I wanted to create an album that would explore the heart of God. My first album, Listen Empty was a dialogue with God about doubt, and this second album is a continuation of learning more about my Father’s heart. One of the greatest things I’ve learned in exploring the heart of God, is His relentless pursuit of His children.

Jesus’ promise to His followers is that life is going to be hard, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” – Matthew 16:24. Even though life is difficult, Jesus promises that He’ll always be with us, and He’ll never forsake us.

My favorite song from the album is “His Name”, can you talk a little more about that song?

Jordan: To be honest, I thought it was too personal of a song to share. It was written from a very honest place of my personal experiences and pain. I didn’t realize that the song was going to connect with so many people. At every show, I hear stories of how the Lord has used this song, it’s incredibly humbling! Someone told me to make this album as if it’s the last one I’m ever going to make. That’s why I’ve decided to share songs that are vulnerable and personal.

What words of encouragement do you have to people who are walking through trials?

Jordan: God knows what it’s like to walk through difficulty and suffering. The times of pain and trials are the times when God is closest, because God cares so much for the brokenhearted. It was during the worst time of my life when my earthly father walked away, that God became everything to me. In the pain, God became my Father, and reminded me of His great care for me.

What would you tell people who don’t feel close to God right now?

Jordan: Remember that God is constantly in pursuit. Even if you don’t feel like he’s near, meditate on His care for His children. Often times God brings us into the desert in order to refocus our eyes upon Him. Something I’ve found helpful when I don’t feel God’s presence is to get alone with God in a quiet place, typically in nature. It’s necessary to get your heart back in tune with the heart of God. There are tangible ways that God’s heart is being made known –  though the church, through His word, through the Holy Spirit. Remember that God’s love is a free gift, not to be bought or sold, and you don’t have to work your way back into His presence, rest in His great love for you.
