Mikey Whalen is an indie songwriter who draws inspiration from the songwriting heavy hitters of decades past. His songs tell stories of lovable misfits and existential woes, sometimes melancholic, sometimes humorous, and often both. He writes and records his songs in his Portland home, which he has affectionately dubbed ‘Pinball Castle’.
https://www.thisissunbathe.com
Sunbathe is a guitar-pop band from Portland, Oregon, formed in 2015 by songwriter Maggie Morris. Known for her ethereal vocals and introspective songwriting, Morris radiates the smarts and edge of Liz Phair at her anthemic best, but with delicate golden guitar and a glut of catchy harmonies that would make James Mercer shed a little tear. The live band has an exceptional lineup including Adria Ivanitsky, Tyler Figley, and Skyler Hamler. Together, the band has an energetic and joyful presence on stage and a signature sound characterized by shimmering guitars, sweeping melodies, and a deep sense of emotional resonance.
Sunbathe’s musical journey has been marked by exciting milestones, including a notable 2019 recognition as one of Portland’s “Best New Bands.” Their growing reputation led them to tour with some of the indie scene’s most respected acts, including Typhoon, Built to Spill, and Helio Sequence, garnering an exceptional response from their audiences. With their anticipated 2025 release, “Myself To You”, the band is set to continue impressing audiences far and wide.

With what PopMatters describes as “tenacious swagger,” critically-acclaimed solo artist Ashleigh Flynn recently dialed up the volume and debuted an all-female rock band as a nod to the “Rosie the Riveter” archetype from WWII.
Flynn grew up in Kentucky and cut her teeth on local bluegrass music and Motown. A prolific songwriter and performer blessed with unbridled charisma, she arrived on the Americana scene in 2008 with the release of her third LP, American Dream, a poetic lament to the elusiveness of that national ethos. A Million Stars followed in 2013 – a rollicking journey celebrating the women pioneers of the American West.
Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters’ inaugural LP hit the streets in 2018 featuring a sound that hearkens back to early Stones, ‘70s psychedelic country rock, and alternately charms like a Sunday afternoon front porch session…

Josh Cole has been playing bluegrass in the Pacific Northwest for over 25 years. It started in the late 90s, when he first heard “Midnight Moonlight” from Old and In the Way. That moment forever bonded Josh to bluegrass music.
He went on to serve as President of the Oregon Bluegrass Association and continues to host “Music From the True Vine” on KBOO-FM, the longest running bluegrass show West of the Mississippi.
Josh’s influences include Ralph Stanley, Larry Sparks, and Bill Monroe, many of whom are featured on the Josh Cole Bluegrass Show, his podcast with nearly 200 episodes of traditional bluegrass recordings.
Josh has played in dozens of bands, along with running his own hard-driving bluegrass band for nearly two decades. That’s why hometown fans have lovingly nicknamed him “The Elvis of Portland Bluegrass.”

Indie musician and singer-songwriter Caitlin Jemma speaks for the multitudes on her celestial disco-folk album, True Meaning, out recently on American Standard Time Records. Conjuring the soulfulness of Norah Jones, the melancholy of Joni Mitchell, and the lyric-bending bewitchment of Bonnie Raitt, Jemma takes listeners on an atmospheric journey from heartbreak to hope throughout the ten dynamic tracks which make up True Meaning—a vulnerable-yet-spirited release exploring the full emotional spectrum of being human, while posing an age-old philosophical question: “What is the true meaning of life?”
Inspired by long, solitary drives on desert highways and then recorded in Portland, OR, with an all-star band, True Meaning is an album of depth, nuance, catharsis, playfulness, and resilience—all things the world needs now.

Reb & the Good News is a Portland based funk-pop, world, and soul group that brings optimism to the dance floor. Catchy horn lines and sultry vocals soar over grooves that you can’t help but move to. The band is led by vocalist and guitarist Reb Conner, whose songs reach for hope in a world under pressure. Her songwriting influences span many genres including afrobeat, jazz, cumbia, reggae, r&b and country, and she uses genre as a tool to portray emotion. Reb believes that through feeling deeply and dancing together, we can face all that we’re up against in this life. She is supported by her creative partner, sax and keys player Leon Cotter, (a touring member of the California Honeydrops), as well as some of Portland’s heaviest hitters: Cyrus Nabipoor on trumpet, Ross Garlow on bass, Kirk Kalbfleisch on drums and percussionist Carmelo Torres on percussion.

The Pagan Jug Band is an all-acoustic, boot-stompin’ band featuring a mean banjo and a rockin’ guitar – throw in more strings, some brass, and a washboard and you’ve got a band that really knows how to get folks out of their seats and onto the dance floor! On any given Tuesday in Portland you’ll see them playing their weekly “Pagan Tuesday” show – where the band sometimes swells up to 10 members as long-time fans and random passers-by join them on stage to keep the music communal. The Pagans have a large body of original songs that they mix seamlessly with carefully curated covers and traditionals.

Shorty & the Mustangs was formed in Spring of 1996. Big Tex called some of his musician friends to see if they wanted to try something new. Having grown up in Texas (something must have gotten in his blood when he was a youngster), western swing music was calling him home. So they dug out some old Bob Wills and Ernest Tubb records and gave it a shot. Well, 29 years later they’re having so much fun they’re still at it. Other folks are liking it, too. They play the bars and honky tonks regularly around Portland, Oregon, and sometimes play at the local farmers markets and festivals.
Shorty & the Mustangs play a mix of western swing, honky tonk and roots country music. Lara Carlisle’s heart felt singing can get folks out on the dance floor with a Patsy Cline torch song or a Gram Parsons rocker. Ken Woodside and Phil Hornik, on drums and bass, lay down a strong dance beat while Mike Moore on guitar, and Mitch “Big Tex” Gilbert on steel guitar put in the twang and tears. Marilee Hord sings beautiful duets with Lara and plays the heck out of the fiddle.

Bang Bang is a 7-piece brass and drums ensemble playing the music of trumpet player, Sam Dechenne. Inspired by the sounds of international brass bands and Jazz ensembles, Funk and Reggae horn sections, West African and Latin American drumming and Western chamber music – their sound is truly their own.
The rhythm section interweaves grooves and swaps roles throughout the performance for a visual and audible experience. Drum set, Cajon, Timbales, Congas, Surdo and a variety of mixed percussion make up the intricate drum beats you’ll hear at a concert. The lower brass section takes on the bass role, rhythmic comping, inner harmony and main melody. Riding the musical wave on top is trumpet, the main melody and voice of the band.
With Bang Bang you’ll hear melodic and fiery solos from every member of the band, soft and intimate 3-part horn section compositions, exciting rhythm breaks and catchy melodies and horn riffs that will keep your ears open and your toes tapping.

Wes Youssi is a singer & songwriter of country music. Though originally hailing from the woods of Boone County, Illinois, he’s called Oregon home since 1995. In his short life of 38 some odd years he has: bused tables in Indiana, punched a man in the face, been laid-off, married, made kids, lived in Detroit, ate a cockroach, shot down a tree, and unknowingly purchased a former cop car.
With his original songs and loyal companions he: plays bars, sweats hard, and meets all kinds of great people along the way to which he is eternally grateful.
William Surly is a singer/songwriter and founder of The Barroom Gospel Band, who saddles his proverbial horse in Portland, Oregon, and is no stranger to the western cocktail. Within the music The Barroom Gospel Band blends classic country with equal parts honky tonk, folk, soul, rock and a whole lot of tequila.
Inspired by story tellers the likes of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson, and rejuvenated by the modern sounds of Sturgil Simpson and Whitey Morgan And The 78’s, Surly pays homage to the ones who came before him, singing songs for those best suited for a bar stool and a long running tab.

DATE SHIFT THIS MONTH!
http://krisdeelaneandthehurt.com
Kris Deelane is making a loud noise in the Portland Rock scene. With her nine piece soul band The Hurt, Kris is amping up her performances in and around Portland and the Pacific Northwest. A true road warrior with years of solid touring experience, Kris is keeping it local and in the moment with shows all over town. From The Alberta Rose Theatre to The Doug Fir, McMenamin’s Edgefield to Al’s Den at the Crystal and a standing residency at Laurelthirst Public House, she and the band are everywhere. Summer 2015, Kris Deelane and The Hurt performed at Oregon Country Fair, What The Festival, and Dixie Festival, and also opened for 3 Dog Night, and Martha Davis and the Motels.
The Hurt is ten players strong and features a number of Portland music luminaries including Ned Failing (Mexican Gun Fight/Floydian Slips) on drums, Steve Kerin on keys (Too Loose Cajun Band, Atomic Gumbo, Rose City Kings and winner of the Cascade Blues Association’s “Keyboardist of the Year”), Greg Hyatt on bass (Five Easy Pieces, Zoo People, Berthaline, and Lapdog, featuring members of Toad The Wet Sprocket), Heidi Shuler (Merl Saunders) on percussion and Alan Toribio (Mexican Gunfight) on guitar. With her backing singers, The Lady Parts, and horn section, Kris is dipping into deep cuts and old school favorites from the soul sounds of the 60’s and 70’s. Think Motown to Memphis, Stax to Atlantic records, Aretha to Etta. It’s all here!

“There’s a ramshackle charm to Branson T. Anderson’s music. Folky with an eye for avant-pop songwriting, it’s the kind of music that seems like it developed in a kind of wonderful isolation, bits of forward-thinking arrangements lovingly scotch taped to a staunch traditionalism that somehow manages to be both exceedingly pleasing, while still being a challenging listen.” -LA Music Blog
Singer-songwriter Branson Anderson hails from Logandale, Nevada, a tiny, sleepy, desert town dating back to the 1860s, best known as the home of the Clark County Fair and Rodeo. As a teen, Anderson started writing songs with dreams of rambling across the land as a traveling musician. In fact, he once ditched high school and took a two and a half day bus ride to Nashville with the sole plan of going to Third Man Records to meet Jack White. It didn’t quite pan out and fifteen hours later he was back on a bus headed home, but a love for the adventures of the road got into his blood on that trip. Spending most of his time in Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming, Anderson gave up his trades as a truck driver and mechanic to pursue music full-time. With a creative approach to writing that eschews traditional song structure, Anderson’s influences include Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Jack White, and Robert Johnson. Fueled by a humble reverence for Americana, as a performer Anderson channels the spirit of yesteryear imbued with a fresh, unique take on roots music. Anderson has toured the U.S. and parts of Europe, opening for Mattiel, Corb Lund, Watchhouse, Charlie Parr, Brothers Comatose, Smooth Hound Smith, Little Hurricane, Lillie Mae, The Kolars, and fellow Utah residents Sammy Brue, Timmy The Teeth and Joshua James, the latter who produced Anderson’s 2017 debut album, Graydog, sophomore album Applecore, Baltimore, and partially the Lord, Have Mercy EP. He is continuously working with Salt Lake City producer and recording artist, Chase Ford, on songs to be released as singles.
https://www.facebook.com/SammyBrue
Sammy Brue is an indie folk artist from Ogden, Utah who first came on the radar of Rolling Stone Magazine at the age of 13. Recognized for his songwriting, Sammy started making waves in the Americana scene and was signed to New West Records. With two studio records released and two EP’s, Sammy started touring and making friends with some of the biggest names around. Starting with a full national tour with his friend and mentor Justin Townes Earle, to touring internationally with The Marcus King Band, Sammy graced stages all around the world by the age of 18. Rooted firmly in his folk style of writing, Sammy was named one of six teenagers changing music by the New Yorker Magazine. With music that ranges from folk and country, to rock and punk, he has defined himself as being a working musician at his core. At 22 and fully independent, Sammy is out promoting his new songs from his upcoming album “Nocturnal Country”. Currently with a catalog of over 100 unreleased songs, and stories of playing with some of the best up-and-coming artists and Rock n Roll Hall of Famers, his future is looking bright. Sammy has opened and toured with artists like Billy Strings, The Marcus King Band, Lucinda Williams, The Backseat Lovers, Justin Townes Earle, Steve Earle, John Moreland, Margo Price, Lindsey Buckingham, Mike Campbell, Hayes Carl, and many more.

Sequoia is a songwriter living in Portland, Oregon. Primarily raised in rural Vermont, with its nice colored leaves and pretty rivers, New England will always be part of him. Having a spread out family has meant living in several places along the East Coast throughout his childhood. Eventually, he moved to Los Angeles, and took a deeper interest in American Folk, Blues, and Country music. Until recently Sequoia lived in Richmond, Virginia where he’d fallen into a vibrant community of songwriters, and performed frequently for drink tickets and pool table quarters. His music is influenced by a transient life, and exposure to the vast American landscape in an exploration of melancholy, anxiety, and hopefulness.

A passionate violinist and vocalist, Michelle Alany has delighted and wowed audiences worldwide.
Specializing in a global acoustic sound that features lush strings, soulful vocals and rhythmic groove, Michelle delivers soulful interpretations of traditional and original Sephardic (Judeo-Spanish), Balkan and Israeli songs infused with her tasty Austin-blues stylings.
She is at home delivering haunting Mediterranean melodies, trading shredder blues licks or gently crafting a sensuous country solo on the fly, bringing her joyous abandon and enthusiasm to any world of music.
As an in-demand touring musician and recording artist, she has performed with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, played for sold-out events in theaters doing movie music or world music ensembles, and brought Texas music to packed Jazz and Blues listening rooms in Europe.

The LaurelThirst has been lucky enough to foster a community of exceptional and diverse people that includes its staff, musicians, neighbors and customers. It is a community that we are constantly thankful for.
