WISE Peer Mentor Application August 2022

Please note this position is for undergraduate students who will be on the Emory Atlanta campus for the Fall 2022 semester.

Thank you for your interest in serving as a peer mentor for our Welcoming Interfaith and Spiritual Exploration (WISE) pre-orientation program.

Please review the Peer Mentor position description below, which outlines the responsibilities and expectations. This position is designated for undergraduate students.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Assist with the recruitment of incoming student participants for the program
- Participate in Peer Mentor meetings (spring and summer)
- Serve as the primary student contacts for incoming students during the program
- Assist with set-up and break-down for activities and sessions throughout the program
- Facilitate reflection activities and co-lead program sessions for incoming students
- Participate fully in all Peer Mentor training activities
- Participate fully in all program sessions and activities
- Help answer questions and inquiries from incoming student participants and families
Time Commitment
- Interviews: March 21, 23, 25
- Peer Mentor Welcome: April 8, 9:00 a.m.
- Peer Mentor Move-in - Friday, August 12 (tentative date)
- Peer Mentor Training - Saturday, August 13-Sunday, August 14 (tentative dates)
- New Student Move-in: Monday, August 15 (tentative date)
- WISE Program: Monday, August 15-Friday, August 19
- Orientation begins: Saturday, August 20

Program concludes in the evening the day before Orientation. Additional commitments include:
- Be available for the entirety of specified staff training, including evenings.
- Be available for the entirety of the program, including evenings.
- Participate in any required spring training and planning sessions.
- Be available to communicate via email during the summer months, including outreach to other peer mentors and participants.

The WISE Interfaith Pre-Orientation program seeks peer mentors from a variety of backgrounds, skill sets, and experiences. Core qualities that we look for in candidates include:
- Hard working, humble, and enthusiastic leaders.
- Flexibility and adaptability.
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude in a busy program and potentially stressful situations.
- Ability to recognize and maintain appropriate boundaries in relationships.
- Active modeling and encouragement of ethical behavior.
- Ability to recognize the diversity of students in a major life transition and work to meet the various needs of students with care.
- The recognition of one’s own limits/boundaries in helping relationships with others and ability to make timely and appropriate referrals.
- Ability to foster respectful and supportive relationships with staff and faculty.
- Eagerness to understand training, information, and methods of support for new students.
- Passion for Emory University, welcoming new students, and interfaith engagement
All Peer Mentors should be:
- Dedicated to facilitating a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable experience to first-years of all backgrounds and identities
- Committed to their role of supporting incoming students through the duration of the Pre-O program
- Able to give, receive, and act upon feedback for the purpose of individual and programmatic growth
- Willing to learn and strengthen the skills necessary to lead
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- In good standing with the university, with respect to academics and conduct
-Current Atlanta campus students OR second-year Oxford students
Compensation
This position is a volunteer leadership position. Free meals are provided during the peer mentor training and program dates. Student leaders living on campus in the fall semester are given early move-in on a set date according to program (students going abroad in the fall or living off-campus will be responsible for their own housing).
