RaeLynn on Her Raw and Personal 'Love Triangle' Video: 'I'm Not Just a Girl Who Sings Fun, Sappy Songs'

The singer's latest music video takes a page straight out of her own life

RaeLynn’s newest music video hits extremely close to home – her childhood home.

The singer’s latest tune “Love Triangle” is a raw and emotional account of what it’s like to be the child of divorced parents.

“When you’re a kid of divorce, that is your life,” RaeLynn, 22, tells PEOPLE exclusively of knowing the feeling first-hand. “You have two beds, you have two separate lives. The whole point of family is to be a unit and to do a lot of things together and it’s just not that when your parents are divorced. I think there’s been a lot of divorce songs out there, but they’ve always been about the parents. They’ve never been from the kid’s perspective.”

Capturing the pain a kid of divorce often feels was something that RaeLynn is proud to have carried into the heartbreaking clip for the song as well.

“Seeing the footage of the little girl that they shot, and how it’s all from her perspective. I don’t know, I get goose bumps every time I talk about it because you couldn’t have painted a more perfect picture of how it felt.”

But, RaeLynn says the emotional ride is worth it for her because she’s glad to be showing a deeper side of herself.

“I wanted to come out with a song that was 100 percent me, and something more raw, because I want people to know that I’m not just a girl who sings fun, sappy songs, or just a bubbly girl. I’ve been through a few things. I know how it feels to go through tough life experiences and I wanted to show that in my music.”

The idea for the song was actually inspired by her parents still not getting along, and despite being an adult now, her still feeling caught in the middle.

“I was headed to a writing session and my mom and dad were arguing that day about really the stupidest thing,” the Voice alum says. “I got to the writing session and there were two of my dearest friends, Jimmy Robbins and Nicolle Galyon, and I started venting about being a kid of divorce. I was like, ‘You know what, though? I don’t want to be in a sad mood today. Let’s just write something fun and sappy.’ Then I threw out the title, ‘Love Triangle.’ I don’t remember who said it, but they were like, ‘Well if you think about it, you’re kind of in a love triangle today.'”

And RaeLynn couldn’t be happier with the result and thinks it will provide a little bit of healing for those who can relate.

“I just think that this song is going to touch a lot of people,” she says. “My dad would pick me up every other Friday at 6, and drop me off by 6 on Sunday. Around 4 every Sunday, I remember him getting a little sad, because he wouldn’t get to see his baby for two weeks. I can’t imagine, when I become a mother, not being able to see my child for two weeks. That’s really hard, but that’s the truth, and that’s the normal for a lot of kids in divorced homes. They have to split their time and split their love. It really is not that fair, but it’s a lot of our normal and our truth.”

One thing that’s clear for RaeLynn, who married husband Joshua Davis in February, her past has better prepared her for her future.

“I know personally from growing up with my experience, divorce is not an option for me and Josh. It will never be, because I believe that love is hard work.”

RaeLynn, who wrote all but one of the songs on the album – to be released early next year – will hit the road with her Voice advisor and mentor Blake Shelton this fall.
